Contessa was a highlight for me. The rooftop restaurant gets lovely natural light and views, and has a relaxed but still refined feel. It was a lovely spot for breakfast or just spending some time. The Newbury Boston also stood out for attentive, professional service and a great overall atmosphere. It has that timeless, old American movie feeling, with classic elegance alongside modern comfort. The amenities were excellent, and it quickly became one of my favorite Boston hotels. Luxurious, but still warm and welcoming.

I was in Boston for a business meeting in February 2026, and this was my first stay here. It isn’t usually where I stay, but I was impressed by the historic character, the local history, and the mix of class, charm, and luxury. Boston Common is just across the street, and Newbury Street has upscale shops within walking distance, including rear access to the Tiffany store itself. The service was impeccable and very attentive. I had dinner at the restaurant on the 17th floor, and that was perfect too. The lobby-level bar and restaurant is charming, with a library setup and quiet corners for talking or meetings. I could see this being a romantic Boston getaway, or a place to stay for some business trips. It’s a Leaders Club property, so frequent stays count toward that program.

The building itself is beautiful, with an elegant feel and a great location. What made the stay disappointing was how uncomfortable ordinary interactions felt. The front desk didn’t make me feel especially welcome, and getting a table at Street Bar felt more like being interrogated than being treated hospitably. I left feeling awkward and out of place instead of relaxed and looked after. Guests should feel at ease regardless of how they look, and I didn’t feel that way here.

It’s an expensive hotel, but I thought it was worth the cost. Street Bar is a nice amenity, and it uses the same kitchen as room service. Everyone from the front desk to the bellman and fireplace butlers gave thoughtful service. Andrew at the front desk had useful restaurant suggestions and made a great first impression that carried from check-in through checkout.

Breakfast at Contessa was the bright spot: the room is beautiful, elegant, and full of light, and both the food and service were good. We did think $27 for avocado toast was too much. The rest of the service felt like a three-star US chain, despite our good experiences at their other hotels and our high hopes for this one. We were using Leaders' Club points from European business trips. Our small carry-on bags sat at the front desk for over an hour after check-in. The library lounge was freezing, and we waited 20 minutes for someone to take our drink order. No one came in, so we figured we should order at the bar next door. The bartender said the library was meant to have its own staff. After the drinks arrived, nobody checked on us. We never saw staff come in for any of the other guests either. After half an hour, we went back to the bar to pay. I could have given the hotel another try, since it was the holiday season and they were hosting business parties and a wedding that weekend. My husband disagreed strongly. As he put it, a hotel at this level and price shouldn’t need a second chance.
