Hyland Inn Near Legoland

I had to leave and find somewhere else to stay because I couldn't check in without a physical credit card. I was prepared to pay with my phone, but the receptionist wanted a physical debit card for the deposit. They suggested I get cash from a nearby ATM, but I had neither a car nor a physical card to use there. I also had no guarantee I'd get the $100 back if I handed it over in cash. Expedia never says a physical card is required at check-in. The receptionist wasn't helpful, and the information on Expedia was misleading. I wouldn't recommend Hyland Inn or Expedia for booking accommodation. I was also disappointed with both: I had used Expedia's “hotels” filter and Hyland Inn near Legoland appeared in the results. The photos looked lovely, but it turned out to be a motel, and Expedia doesn't clearly say that.

We paid a great price, but you get what you pay for. The place is very close to the beach and restaurants, though the parking is odd. The room had a terrible smell, and the photos make it look much nicer. The window was open when we arrived and its screen was ripped. There was only one cup for a drink, and it had clearly been used, with coffee on the rim. The fridge looked awful outside, the bed hurt my back, and there were ants in the bathroom. I couldn't give my son a bath because there was no drain plug or pull. The door had no lock. We kept the do-not-disturb sign up for a day, then removed it so housekeeping could clean during the two days we were there, but they never came. We ran out of toilet paper and were nervous about asking. We needed fresh towels, so my boyfriend brought the old ones to the ladies in the laundry room. One said no service; another brought two new towels hours later, apparently because the first lady was mad.

We stayed three nights over New Year's, my wife, our two kids, and me. At checkout, the woman at the desk said she'd inspect the room before returning our $100 cash damage deposit. She came back claiming the towels had changed color and were damaged, and that the room was a mess. We'd only used the towels to shower and left them on the floor for the maids. She also said her maids complain about us when we leave, and had complained last time too that they didn't want to clean our room. To me, that sounds like they just want to make the beds. She first refused to return all of the deposit, then gave it back in $20 bills instead of the $100 bill I'd handed over. We used to come here regularly, but after this experience we'll never stay again, and I wouldn't recommend it. Other reviews also describe what seems like a damage deposit scam. A deposit for damage should be returned.

We just needed a place to crash for one night. They offered us a three-bed room, but there was only one towel. We called for more and never got any. The pillows were very thin and uncomfortable. I didn't like the place.
