The Lodges at Gettysburg

The ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception were lovely, and the main lodge and event area were nice. We came for the weekend as family of the bride and groom, who held their destination wedding here. From outside, everything looked great, but the cabin was cute and uncomfortable. The mattress could use an update, and the only other seat was an ancient-looking bench with a sunken cushion that smelled and made me feel like I’d fall through it. For such an expensive venue, charging the bridal party $5 per cup for coffee or tea while they were getting hair and makeup done felt stingy. They’d paid for breakfast items, too. In mid-December, the wedding and booked guests seemed to be the only reason the place was making money, so they should have been given champagne or whatever they wanted. The on-site restaurant didn’t open until 3 p.m., so wedding guests couldn’t get breakfast or lunch. A poor call that cost them money, which they apparently want more of.

Gettysburg is my favorite place to visit, and I’m planning to stay at the Lodges again. We were there over Christmas, and the staff were great about checking that we were doing well. At one point we were the only guests, and it was so quiet and peaceful. The location also gave us privacy.

We loved the quiet, tucked-away setting beyond the battlefield and having our own little building. Our late-fall stay felt cozy, with lodge-style decor and a comfortable room. We had the NY lodge, with a bedroom, kitchenette, large bathroom with a stone shower, and coat closet. It’s an 8-10 minute drive across the battle park to town. The restaurant was excellent, especially the bar service, and the front desk helped with anything we needed. The only drawback was finding the entrance: GPS calls the road unnamed, and it’s easy to miss the turn when it’s on your right. At night, lanterns line the whole drive, so it’s hard to miss.

The lodges overlook the battlefield, which is really cool, and the restaurant food was great. I’m staying three nights, and Hope was terrific when helping me check in. I’d definitely stay again.
