Church Street Inn Historic Charleston, Ascend Collection Hotel

The bathroom sink had a cockroach in it one morning, which really affected my sense of cleanliness and comfort. Pest control and preventive maintenance need attention, especially in an older building. The inn does have a lot of charm, with an old-world feel and historic character that gives it a sense of place beyond a standard hotel. Its location is excellent for exploring the historic district, with everything easy to reach on foot. Better attention to housekeeping and maintenance would make the experience much stronger.

We booked this place at the last minute after leaving another hotel just 20 minutes after arriving, and what an improvement. The location is right by market st, close to shops, restaurants and tours. We used the parking pass the hotel provided for the garage on the corner of church st. There wasn't breakfast, which didn't bother us, and the free morning coffee was excellent. Having a kitchen in the room helped us save on travel costs by making food there. For the location and price, it's one of the best places to stay. My wife loved the jacuzzi tub in our room, and we'll definitely return for a longer visit.

The location is perfect, and the layout with a full kitchen and 1.5 bathrooms works really well. We've stayed here several times over the years, but the property's condition on this latest trip was disappointing and embarrassing after I'd told my guests how great it was. Walls were damaged and half painted, bathrooms dirty and dusty, TV remotes didn't work, and the AC never got down to the cool setting, leaving the room hot and stuffy and making it hard to sleep. When I told the front desk, they just said, "thanks for letting us know." They didn't offer another room or to have maintenance check the AC. Workers were doing construction and repairs throughout our stay, and were very foul mouthed and sketchy. Very disappointing.

The room smelled really bad the whole stay, like rotten eggs. There was standing water in the dishwasher giving off a foul odor. I told the desk right after check-in that something was off, then ran the dishwasher and disposal myself before going to dinner, but it didn't clear up. The first-floor windows don't open, so my only option was to leave the upstairs bedroom door open. I even bought a candle to try to cover the smell, but the carpet and fabric held it, and the water remained. Customer service had already been rude and hung up on me before I arrived, so this was a hard pass. Housekeeping didn't clean, but still pounded on the door at 10am to ask if we needed towels. There was no blanket for the hide-a-bed.
