The GM and front desk staff were polite and apologetic, but I still had to keep going to the office for things housekeeping should have handled. There were no towels in our renovated, handicapped room, and after the expected delivery didn’t arrive, the GM said they had to wash some. The next day they took our used towels but left no clean ones, and didn’t make the beds, empty trash, or clean the room. I also had to point out a loose bar at the bottom of the door and a towel holder loose at the top. The room smelled like dirty bleach water and the original room was dreary, so we were moved to the renovated one. It was bigger, but had double beds instead of queens, too short for both of us over 6 feet tall. The area felt rough at night, and police arrested people near our door. There was a frozen turkey pot pie stuck to the freezer shelf, apparently from who knows when, and no soap or shampoo in the bathroom. I brought my own, luckily. I know this wasn’t a 5-star hotel, but I expect basic clean linens, swept floors, emptied bins, and made beds.

The location was excellent, with restaurants, a gas station, and a Family Dollar all easy to walk to, and just a few miles from the WV state government offices where I had business. The staff were wonderful and very helpful, though I got the impression they were used to performing miracles to keep the place running. They had to use a backup card reader because the good one was broken, and my power strip and refrigerator didn’t work. Both repairs were referred to the maintenance man, who was just arriving as I checked out. The room was as clean as daily cleaning could manage, but the place needs more upkeep. The elevator door paint was chipped, and the balcony railing had serious rust stains coming through the stucco or paint. The second floor balcony wall had ugly brown splashes of something unknown. In the room, the tub’s non-slip surface was gray and worn, though the water was hot and pressure good. The floor seemed only quickly damp mopped, not scrubbed. Bedding was clean and mattress OK, but the bedspread had a hole. The laundry info card was ancient and worn, the ice bucket cracked with no liner, and the broken fridge meant dinner leftovers wouldn’t have kept, nor was it easy to store ice. I recognize the Motel 6 chain for clean, quiet, well-maintained budget places. As someone with allergies, I like hard floors and fewer surfaces that collect dust or grow mold. I stay at Motel 6 whenever I can, but next time I’d try the Cross Lanes Motel 6. This dingy, dumpy room was too depressing. I suspect the owners can’t or won’t spend what’s needed to run a nice motel.

I only stay overnight somewhere about once a year, and for what I paid, the room wasn’t bad. I didn’t expect extras, just cleanliness. At first it looked neat, but once I looked closer, my socks turned black after walking around without shoes. The coverlets were dirty, even though the sheets and pillow were clean. I checked for bedbugs and didn’t find any. As I was leaving in the morning, I noticed a huge black dirt handprint low on the door, which immediately brought every horror movie I’ve seen to mind. Housekeeping really needs to clean the floors and chairs and give the coverlets a thorough wash.

The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating, and the handicapped room was exceptionally clean. I slept comfortably on a good mattress with great pillows, and liked the plain, clean bedspread. The shower had strong pressure and plenty of hot water. There’s good parking and lots of nearby restaurants. The waxed floor was a little sticky, though I personally prefer wood flooring to carpet. For much less money, it was a very pleasant, comfortable stay, and I’d come back.

The front desk person was fantastic, and at $49 per night over New Year’s, the price was very low and the stay about what I expected, maybe a little better. Smoke regularly came into my non-smoking room from adjoining rooms, through the bathroom area. One pillow had no case, and they said none were available when I asked. The blanket had about a dozen burn holes. I was also unimpressed by some of the other guests, so I kept my valuables with me, carrying everything to the car each time I went out.
