The Quarters on Vendue

The room was extremely hot, and although the air conditioning was very noisy, it didn’t cool anything down. We told the property manager, but were refused a refund because we had booked a non-refundable stay. We also had trouble checking in to the loft on Friday afternoon, August 15, 2025. Once we got instructions to enter, we realized it wasn’t the Vendue Hotel and felt we’d been victims of a bait and switch.

We were more or less on our own since there’s no front desk, but the manager was polite, easy to reach by phone, and responsive on the few occasions we called. The suite was quiet, especially at night, and the clean, crisp sheets were on very comfortable beds. We rented a two-bedroom suite for one night on 9/14/22, with a king-size bed and private bathroom in each room. The location in Charleston’s French Quarter was fabulous, close to everything. The kitchen had the appliances and utensils we needed. The bathrooms were the weak point: sinks had been cleaned, but the floor and shower grout was filthy, and the walls needed a good wipe. I enjoyed visiting Charleston and would stay there again.

The room’s location earned the two stars. From 30 Vendue, we could easily reach coffee shops, restaurants, and the boardwalk, and the parking garage was convenient enough. They also left a nice note wishing my wife a happy birthday. We booked Room 102 through Vrbo for three nights to celebrate her birthday, drove down from MD, and paid about $1,600 because of the time of year. The mold was the biggest problem. There was a dank smell as soon as we entered, and we found mold around vents and some light fixtures. Wood near a shower in one bathroom looked rotted. My wife has asthma and woke with an asthma attack, so we left before checkout. We had to empty the suite’s dehumidifier several times, and I wish that had been shown in the photos or mentioned in the description. Housekeeping also seemed lacking. Lots of things were dusty or stained, including the fan in the second bedroom and the turtles in the main bedroom shown in my photos. It didn’t look like the room had had a deep clean in a while. The refrigerator was useful, but its water filter hadn’t been changed before our arrival. I called about it; I think it was documented, but I don’t know if it will actually be changed for the next guest unless they complain too. The Vrbo listing said there would be coffee, but there was only one K-cup. It didn’t seem like much had been done to turn over the room. Internet was spotty, and cell service in the suite wasn’t reliable either. We had phones, no heavy-duty electronics like laptops, and used the TV to watch a few things between sightseeing. The service was Xfinity, which we have in MD, but it only connected in the front of the suite. Great location, but a moldy room. Unless you barely plan to spend time there, you may be better off staying elsewhere and paying to park in the nearby garage.

The good points were the quiet and the location, near streets with coffee shops, restaurants, and art galleries. But in Room 102, my clothes and bags smelled of mold after the stay. There was no Wi-Fi in the bedroom farthest from the entrance and living area, no pods for the pod coffee maker, and no tea kettle. The shower had no hot water, and a cockroach ran across the floor on our first night. A man on the street outside the entrance knew the building access code. The only windows in the corridor looked out at a brick wall.
