I’ve been coming to Norfolk five to seven times a year for three years and usually stay in this same area. I used to choose this hotel, but after it was sold to a new management company, I changed my mind. To me, that was one of the worst decisions Hyatt has made. The Chesapeake location felt worse than roadside motels and La Quinta. What bothered me most was how watched and unsafe I felt. Cameras appeared throughout the hallways after the takeover, including right outside the doors, and I felt as if everything I did was being monitored. The new managers were rude and suspicious, and on two trips without my husband I never felt safe. I came for a quiet, private stay, but it felt more like being watched in a prison. There were also problems with cleanliness and organization, and even ordinary noise seemed to bring trouble. Wearing high heels while getting ready could lead to several calls from reception. When friends or makeup artists came to my room, staff told the person downstairs I was too loud, banged on my door, and acted threatening and arrogant. My stays here have become the worst experiences of my life. I had a similar experience once in another state, also with foreign managers. People come from different countries and adapt, but guests should be able to feel safe in a place they pay for, not threatened all the time.

The noise next door made it almost impossible for us to rest. The guests there had children who kept yelling and banging around. On top of that, when we checked the bed, we found blood on the sheets, which was upsetting and unacceptable. I couldn't sleep comfortably after seeing it. This was a very unpleasant stay, and I wouldn't recommend the place unless these problems are dealt with.

The room looked lovely, just like the pictures, and we had a king suite in a great spot at Virginia Town Center. But all the suites face Independence Blvd from the corner, and the windows aren't double-paned, so you hear every passing car, cat, dog, and person. There’s a hospital about two miles up the street, too, and we heard at least 10 ambulances a night. The heating and air unit was right by the headboard and roared every time it kicked on. The hotel was fully booked, so I couldn't switch rooms. I got no sleep for five days. Get a room facing the parking lot if you want any rest.

I was there for job training and found it a nice mid-grade hotel. Check-in was easy, the room was clean, and the staff were friendly. I ate at the restaurant area since its staff hadn't arrived yet. Breakfast was hot and free, with the usual American options like eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes or waffles. They had variations of those items, not everything all at once.

I came for a business trip, and the stay went wrong in so many ways that I rarely write reviews this long. The biggest problem came after checkout: I moved my flight earlier and left about eight hours early, around 3 AM. The next day I found a $500 cigarette smoking fee, even though I don't smoke cigarettes. The manager wouldn't work with me to reverse it. The charge overdrafted my bank account by hundreds of dollars, and I couldn't feed my family while disputing it. I've contacted the BBB, Attorney General, FCC, and Hyatt Corporate. For a place rated 4.1 stars, I don't understand where that rating comes from. The room was musty and stale. The couch cushion had a 7-inch tear, the ceiling had cracks and poor patchwork that looked like possible water damage, the refrigerator was jammed in at an angle, and the tiny half-bath steamed up so badly on hot that I couldn't see. The linens were dingy and smelled stale, so I slept on the couch with the spare blanket. There were visible carpet stains, weak Wi-Fi, and little else in the way of amenities. A cockroach was there, too. The A/C was extremely loud and kept changing modes, making the temperature swing enough to wake me sweating several times. The iron leaked all over my suit because its outlet kept timing out unless I held the button down. At check-in, nobody wore a uniform, so it wasn't clear who worked there. The greeting was cold: I got a key, handed over my debit card, heard there was continental breakfast, and that was it. It felt sketchy and unprofessional. I inspected the room like a rental car so I wouldn't be blamed for damage. The room-service menu was tiny and overpriced. I tried a double cheeseburger once and wouldn't order it again: generic, processed taste, a rock-hard bottom bun, and cold Parmesan fries. Breakfast wasn't much better, with imitation eggs and half-done boiled eggs. I managed half a waffle, cereal, and one bite of sausage before deciding to eat elsewhere. I barely dealt with staff, but a housekeeper pushed her cart into the elevator with me, called me “Mr. T,” and commented on my jewelry. She laughed and meant it as a joke, but it felt stereotypical and inappropriate. There was no complimentary water anywhere. When I asked the front desk, they gave me tap water in a cup, which I threw away outside.
