The Historic Plains Hotel

The lobby was cool, and the front desk ladies were welcoming and friendly. That's about the only good part of the hotel for me. The restaurant wasn't open, and the room was awful and clearly hadn't been cleaned well. The pillowcases had been used, so I asked for clean ones and got them. There was a terrible smell, plus hair in the shower and sink. In the morning, I unplugged a light to use the coffee maker and found a pile of garbage behind the fridge. I was really disappointed.

We were exhausted and it was late, so we stayed, but I regretted it right away. I made the mistake of smelling the pillow and nearly retched. Room 444, the suite we booked, barely resembled the website photos. The place was shockingly dirty and run-down, more like a flop house than a hotel, and I felt misled by the pictures and description. The carpet was worn through in spots, stained, and filthy. The furniture looked like it had been pulled from a dumpster and was too grimy to want to sit on. In the bathroom, the grout was black, the fixtures were chipped and stained, and I wouldn't want to touch the shower curtain. The towels and bed linens were discolored and past their prime. Avoid this place. Read the reviews first, as I wish I had, and save yourself the disappointment and Lysol.

The bar staff were super friendly, and after coming across The Plains you find yourself in a historic, pretty part of Wyoming's capital. The room was clean and nice. It's around 100 years old, with its last major renovation in the early 2000s, so set your expectations accordingly. The TVs were new, but there aren't many outlets, and pipes are exposed because the plumbing was added sometime after the hotel was built. It opened three years before World War I, and the first named transcontinental road wasn't proposed until about a year later. Eisenhower stayed here during the 1919 army motor convoy, and the original route of the Lincoln Highway runs right alongside. It's well worth a stay if you're passing through, especially off-season. Book early for Frontier Days, though, since the place gets busy.

The young woman at the front desk on 03/12/2026 was incredibly kind and helpful. She went above and beyond to make me comfortable, and I wish I could give her ten stars. Sorry I didn't catch her name when I checked out. She's the best, thank you again for being so kind.
