Trader Todd’s next door is a karaoke bar, and we had a lot of fun stopping in for an hour to listen and hang out. It has a younger crowd and seems like a good activity for a group of friends. The shared spaces at the Inn are cute and well decorated, and the place has a quaint, comfortable, simple feel. The location is great too, less than two blocks from the red line, with lots going on nearby even though this isn’t the main downtown area. There’s a Chicago police department right across from the Inn, and we felt safe day and night. Our room and separate private bathroom met our needs. The shared kitchen has pots and pans, a gas stove, and a brand new fridge, but not much crockery, so I’d bring some. We didn’t have hand soap or body soap in the bathroom. That’s why I gave service 4/5. Still, we’re very happy we found The Old Chicago Inn. It felt like living simply in a comfortable, charming place. I had the Julie in Julie and Julia feeling, except we were in Chicago and there was no Julia Child.

Cheap, in an amazing location, and it felt secure and safe. I agree with the positive reviews, though my clean room wasn’t the one shown as 2d in the listing photos. It looked more like a room in a sober living facility. The whole place could use a deep cleaning, and calling a store-bought pastry and yogurt the B&B breakfast was a real letdown. The speakeasy was booked for a private party on Halloween Saturday, so I didn’t get to see it.

The owner was quick to respond by text and phone, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance. Wrigley Field is about a ten-minute walk if you don’t stop at all those places along the way. The rooms are small but work fine for a couple. We had a great stay.

The hosts were really nice and made sure we had what we needed. Belmont train station is about as close as it gets, and from there you can reach almost anywhere in the city in about half an hour. Wonderful place to stay. I’ll definitely recommend it.

We checked out Room 13, the basement speakeasy, where Gary made us tasty cocktails. I had the aviation and my husband ordered the blood and sand, and we both gave them a big thumbs-up. Room 13 was also featured in the guide Secret Chicago. We only stayed one night, but it was lovely. The inn has vintage furniture and fixtures with Chicago-themed decor. We were in room 3a, with a separate bathroom, which worked fine for us. The shared sitting room on the third floor also makes the place feel bigger than it looks in the pictures.
