For my girlfriend Aubrey and me, The Western has been a happy choice for our first home together in a favorite city. We picked it after a frantic 72-hour apartment search, driving across the country and viewing 24 places. Georgia showed us the unit and was professional and accommodating. Management, especially Joshua and his staff, communicated well while we were deciding from 800 miles away. Maintenance keeps the building clean and handles requests quickly. Our initial list was fixed within a week, most of it within 48 hours. We love Bucktown and the community, with bars, restaurants, parks, and hangouts nearby, the 606 a quarter mile away. The apartment has high ceilings, modern design, quality appliances, washer and dryer, HVAC, floor-to-ceiling living room windows, natural light, and a great skyline view. It’s generally well soundproofed, though the front door lets some sound in and there are ways to address that. The rooftop is what really sold us: an incredible skyline view where you can see Wrigley and the UC. Outside there are grills, a firepit, bocce ball, and a dog run. Inside are TVs, a lounge, kitchen, shuffleboard, and tables for hanging out, working, or studying. The renovation just finished. It was closed longer than we liked, but we’re looking forward to the improvements. Other perks include a fitness room with dumbbells and cardio machines, parking if you’re lucky enough to get a spot, and bike storage I’ll soon use. We understand people may have bad experiences and be quicker to post a one-star review. We gave four stars because the rooftop closure added stress when Aubrey was finishing her Masters and needed somewhere to zone out and study. With the improvements, we expect that won’t be an issue going forward, and hope to give five stars next year.

My unit feels like the perfect home, and I’ve had a pretty much flawless year and a half living at The Western. Management is friendly and helpful, and maintenance is incredibly quick and efficient. The woman who cleans the building is so sweet and does an amazing job. I honestly can’t say enough good things! 😊

Management should be ashamed of themselves. This was a horrific place to live, even though the rooftop was nice and the maintenance and cleaning staff were helpful. We lived here for two years. Management seemed shady and unhelpful, and communication could just stop. My bike was stolen from the private, secured bike garage, and management did nothing. There are deliberately no security cameras in there, so they can avoid being held responsible. Management also took residents’ packages if they weren’t picked up quickly enough. My Amazon package disappeared from the vestibule in less than a day. I reported it and got no response, then a few days later there was a mass email saying to pick up packages at the office. So they had effectively taken it, then announced what they’d done after being called out. One month we paid rent, with proof the money had left our account, but they kept saying they hadn’t received it. Our bank said The Western had tried to overdraw the rent five times and suggested opening a case. Months after we’d moved out, they called at 5 p.m. on a Friday demanding we pay that night or be sent to collections, despite all the evidence we’d paid. I believe they waited until the last second to benefit themselves. They confirmed this and never notified collections. Almost half a year after moving, collections called because the case had never been closed on their end. I could list ten more problems, but this is enough. Absolutely awful.

I had to move in immediately because of an emergency, and Kyle made it possible by speeding up the process. He answered all my questions promptly and was a joy to work with. The move-in went smoothly.

I’ve only lived here two weeks, and it’s already been the worst experience. If you’re considering renting here, run! My car was vandalized in the gated garage, and management did nothing. I had to contact them several times before anyone replied, only to learn that the security cameras don’t work. Parking costs $250 a month, so my car should be secure. Now I’m stuck paying over $500 to fix the damage. It’s worrying to think what could happen to a person in that gated lot. The lack of concern feels horrifying. I was told the old manager had been let go and things would be much better than the reviews. Ha!
