Wrangell Mountain Lodge

The hosts were the best part. They’re lovely, kind, and very helpful. The place itself is gorgeous, right in the middle of the NP, and our cabin was cozy with everything we needed. If you want an immersive stay in nature, this is the place.

The Bear Cabin and Fishing Cabin were both incredibly comfortable, with rustic wilderness decor and comfy beds. Our friends stayed in Fishing Cabin, and we stayed in Bear Cabin. James and Cristina made huge, home-cooked breakfasts each morning, and we loved the food and conversation. Their beautiful property is surrounded by mountains, and Wrangell Mountain Lodge gives you quiet serenity in Wrangell-St. Elias with modern comforts. We didn’t want to leave! We had the best time here. McCarthy Road wasn’t as rough as people make it sound. Take it easy and your tires will be fine, so don’t let the mix of paved and dirt stretches put you off staying.

Booking.com only allowed two adults, so we found the lodge’s own website and contacted James. Our family of four fit comfortably in the cabin, which had an attic and a tepee that our eight-year-old daughter loved so much she didn’t want to get out the next morning. We stayed in Bear Cabin, one of four lovely cabins, and the surroundings were beautiful. James and Christina were great hosts, sharing travel advice and stories over a huge, delicious breakfast. Since we hadn’t brought bear spray for the Root Glacier hike, they lent us some. It’s an ideal base for the Root Glacier Trail. The gravel road from Chitina to McCarthy was much better than we expected. We think a sedan could manage it comfortably, and we saw a few sedans make it to the end of McCarthy road.

We wish we’d planned to stay more than one night at this wonderful B&B. The private cabins were exceptionally equipped and had incredible views of the Wrangell mountains. Ours was easily the nicest cabin we’ve stayed in in Alaska. Breakfast was great, the bed was more comfortable than our own, and we enjoyed exploring the property. James and Cristina were excellent hosts, and it was lovely to meet them and hear their story. Highly recommend staying here as a home base for exploring Wrangell-st Elias national park.
