Seven Gables, St. Louis West, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

The room was clean, everything worked, and we didn't hear other guests in the hall. My wife and I were in town for a wedding and enjoyed our stay. I'd read the recent reviews before booking, but our experience didn't match what others described. We planned to eat at the restaurant, though we had to leave earlier than expected and didn't get to try it. The staff were very friendly. If I'm near here again, I'd be glad to stay here.

The room itself and the bathroom looked clean, but dust had built up on the lamps, ice bucket, fixtures, and plenty of other spots. The in-room coffee maker also didn't work. Breakfast was called “free,” but it was just scrambled egg whites and a few strips of badly undercooked bacon. I had no change, so I left a $10 tip. Then I noticed a separate $1.80 tip had been added to my room bill. The hotel and rooms have charm, but the upkeep and restaurant need work. There are so many better places in the area that I'd strongly suggest staying somewhere else.

The warm, cozy feel at 7 gables made the visit enjoyable, and Zack behind the bar was one of the kindest, most professional bartenders I've met. I travel every week, so I've met a lot. I'll definitely be back.

We booked the hotel for a corporate event because of its charm and the option to host people indoors and outside. Rain changed our original plan to have most guests outside, and the hotel promised enough indoor space for everyone. Instead, we were given only half the promised space in a room rated for 63 people, though our event had more than 100 attendees. The promised staffing also fell short: we were told there would be three bartenders and two servers passing food, but there were only two bartenders and no servers. And an hour before the event, the hotel still wasn't ready to move things inside. We had to rearrange chairs and tables ourselves to make the room usable, which delayed the event and disrupted our preparations. We chose the venue for its character and flexibility, but won't use it for another event. I'd advise others to avoid it until management can keep its promises instead of offering excuses.
