La Avenida Inn

The front desk staff were exceptionally kind and helpful, and the pool was decent. Our room was fairly quiet, and the Coronado location has its appeal, but the room itself had some serious problems. There were no blackout curtains, so light made it hard to sleep. The sheets didn't feel clean, and the king bed had no fitted sheet. By morning, the bottom sheet had bunched up and I was on the mattress protector. There was also no second lock or chain high enough to keep our two-year-old from opening the door. The deadbolt released with the lever handle, so we had to pile suitcases against the door, which felt unsafe with the road right outside. There was no microwave or fridge for heating food, either. The advertised breakfast pastries and coffee in the front office weren't available during our week there. This is a two-star hotel, and that's what I'd rate it. Aside from the helpful staff, there wasn't much else I liked.

The location is perfect, parking is great, and we walked to dinner. Our room was clean, though clearly well used. It was right by the pool, so the 8 p.m. closing time was a plus. Don't count on breakfast, though. My husband thought the coffee was awful, there was no decaf for me, and the pastries were Little Debbie packages with powdered creamer instead of milk. They did have apples and oranges. We went to Vons to get breakfast for the next day, though the room's small fridge came in handy.

I was here for work and only needed a bed and shower for the week. The bed was comfortable and the room clean. The pool looked clean and stayed quiet, though I didn't use it. The walls are thin, but being considerate seems to help keep things peaceful. The motel is outdated and needs upgrades, which is about what I'd expect. I was nervous after reading the one-star reviews, but the price and location made sense for my Coronado trip. It's obviously not Hotel del quality, so don't expect luxury and you should be fine.

Great location, and housekeeping did a great job keeping the rooms clean. The rooms are a little dated. It was handy that they had beach towels, plus buckets and shovels our kids could keep. I would've liked more choices at the light breakfast.
