Quality Inn & Suites Covington

The room was clean, but the place felt dumpy for what it cost. I found old AC units and refrigerators sitting around outside, and the ice machine was broken. I went looking for ice and other working amenities, only to find that the washer was broken too. There's one washer and one dryer for the whole property, and the worn paper taped to the washer made it look like it had been out of order for ages. I'd made clear that I needed laundry and asked whether they had a machine. They did, but the front desk girl didn't know if it worked. She was super friendly and later very apologetic, though. The price online through their own site was $80, but the front desk charged $84. I also paid another $4 for ice down the street. For another $14, I could have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. I wanted to like this place, but it wasn't cheap enough to make up for the shortcomings. There are three other hotels on the block for just a little more. Pay a few extra bucks for a much better room.

The staff made the stay comfortable, and they went out of their way to help. The bed was clean and very comfortable, with a power strip on the bedside table for all my devices. Breakfast was the usual for this kind of hotel, waffles, scrambled eggs, sausage, and cold cereal, all fresh and regularly replenished. The washer and dryer worked, though I didn't use them, and you'll need to bring detergent since they don't sell it. When another guest damaged the ice machine, the manager, Mr. Patel, brought me a bucket of ice on Monday. It was repaired and working by Wednesday. There were some drawbacks. The hotel looks dated and could use an upgrade, and my “non-smoking” room had a moderate smoke smell, though the bedding didn't. The hotel does offer smoking rooms, so keep that in mind when booking. Running the AC didn't help much; I bought an air purifier at Costco, which made a big difference, but my clothes still smelled of smoke when I got home. I checked in Sunday and found the TV had dark stripes scrolling up the screen on every channel, apparently a signal issue. It was an older set without apps or casting. I mentioned it to Mr. Patel, and by Tuesday afternoon they'd replaced it with a smart TV. The stripes were still there, but streaming services came through clearly. I'd happily stay again because the staff were great, if not for the pervasive smoke smell in a non-smoking room.

The floors were filthy, not swept or mopped, and the toilet wouldn't flush. There was no toilet paper, and the towels were stained. Overall, this was a horrible place to stay. I definitely won't be back and don't recommend it.

The railings are rusted through, holes in things have been patched badly, and the carpets are stained. This is one of the worst motels I’ve stayed in. I don’t get how Choice Hotels still lets them use the name.
