Hyatt Place UC Davis

This newer hotel has serious staffing and organization problems, and I wouldn’t recommend staying until they’ve got more experience. They overbooked and didn’t honor one of our Hotels.com reservations, leaving us scrambling for somewhere to sleep at 10 p.m. Housekeeping was also very limited and only available by request, but no one told us that, even when we asked directly about having the room cleaned.

The location is great, and the stay was clean and quiet. The only issue was a lingering smell from whatever they used to clean the bathroom, at least that’s our guess. The front desk team was the best I’ve come across at any Hyatt Place we’ve stayed in. You really made the stay better!

Hyatt Place UC Davis is a comfortable, well-run hotel. The rooms are clean, the staff professional, and the experience is what I’d expect from the brand. It’s one of the more dependable places nearby and delivers what it promises without drama. The university next door feels very different to me. UC Davis seems to offer a low return for the time, money, and effort involved, and the outcomes often don’t seem to match the promises made to attract students and visitors. Campus culture also feels overly political and hierarchical. Getting ahead appears to depend more on managing internal relationships and appearances, and avoiding conflict, than on merit or strong results. That can be discouraging for capable people who think independently. If you’re staying in the area, I think the hotel is a good choice. The quality of Hyatt Place and the broader UC Davis environment operate by very different standards.

The room was clean, though a bit dated, and the beds were softer than I like. Water kept dripping from the shower head, so I had to shut the door to block the noise. Breakfast was below average for a three-star hotel, with limited choices and a dirty floor. The toaster was smoking and burnt, so I had to call someone from the kitchen to clean it up.
