I was willing to let the problems go, but having $20 taken from my deposit after I was told it would be handled differently pushed me to write this. I came for work, doing 7/13s on night shifts. When I booked a few days ahead, they said I could check in early because of my schedule. The room wasn’t ready when I arrived, so I waited over an hour for it to be cleaned. I didn’t mind waiting if it meant a clean room, but after hauling everything upstairs to the second floor, I found it smelled strongly of musk and cigarette smoke. I was exhausted, so around 10, after getting off at 6 and stopping at the Target about a block away for air fresheners, I called the manager. The air fresheners hadn’t helped, and she agreed the smell was bad. I fell asleep, then got a call about two hours later saying another room was ready. I moved again and went straight to sleep. The next day there were bugs all over the bathroom. At the office, they said someone would come spray and mentioned that “someone stayed there for a long time before you,” though I’d been told they didn’t allow long-term stays. The following morning my key wouldn’t work, even though I hadn’t used the second key they gave me and it had stayed in my car. I called after hours around 6:45, and the person who came to unlock the door said I owed $20 for the visit. Nobody had told me about that fee at check-in. The woman who helped me the next day said they’d take care of it. There was also a delay getting my deposit back. About two weeks after checkout, I called because it still hadn’t appeared on my card. They said they didn’t have my card details to return it. I asked why they hadn’t called, since they didn’t have my phone number either. They eventually mailed a check, but it was $20 short. They’d told me pressure washing was happening the next day and asked me to move my car, then it went on all day for a week straight. When the bug person finally came the next week, I got woken up again. I could hear everything from upstairs, where people stomped around all day. I politely asked the office to remind them to be considerate of those below, and called back an hour later because it was still bad. They said they hadn’t had a chance because they were busy. If you work days, avoid this place if you can. You won’t sleep. It’s definitely a hole in the wall, though the price reflects that. I was understanding about nearly all of it, but keeping money from my deposit after saying they wouldn’t was too much.

The room was basic but clean, and housekeeping did a good job getting rooms spotless for new guests. It was easy to get fresh towels, too. But there were cockroaches, and I was glad to leave after my week was up. I’d stayed there because it was easier to get to work, and thankfully I had other options. The owner, an older white woman, was one of the rudest people I’ve met. After just one day, she spoke to me and to the man staying next door in a cruel way. He told her his mother had just died, and instead of offering sympathy before explaining a policy issue, she talked down to him like a child and said it had nothing to do with her. With me, I wondered if she assumed I was a drug addict because many tenants there are, though I’ve never touched drugs. She doesn’t seem to know how to speak to people decently. I feel for anyone staying there because they have nowhere else to go. She was quick to mention several times that she owns three hotels. I can imagine she deals with difficult guests, damage, or late payments, and maybe that’s why she expects the worst of everyone. That’s still sad. I kept thinking afterward about how she treats the same people who pay her bills each month. I wouldn’t give her another dollar even if this were the last bed in Decatur during an emergency. $1,200 a month for cockroaches, dryers that barely work, and an owner who looks down on everyone just isn’t worth it.
The rooms have no cigarette smell now, and the one I’m in has been painted and refurbished. They’ve also pulled out the carpets and put flooring in. Guest service feels like guest service. I stayed here before and it wasn’t the best experience, so I can tell things have improved. For the price, I’m impressed. 👍
The maintenance guy works hard and is wonderful, and the customer service is great. I lived here for a while during a transition with my son and boyfriend, and enjoyed our time. It works for both long and short stays. Prices could be lower, but otherwise it’s great. I never saw any commotions, and there are cameras everywhere, so you and your car are under surveillance the whole time. I’d refer a friend, though I don’t know many people in Alabama.
We eventually moved to Inntown suites, and the staff there were AMAZING, so kind, and helped us whenever something came up. The rooms were remodeled, clean, and nice. When the AC broke, they replaced the whole thing. After a few months there, my partner and I got an apartment. I met some very nice people at Inntown, and they also had a pool converted to saltwater plus a hangout and picnic area. My mental health was saved there, and I’m so thankful. We’d lived at Stay Lodge for two years, and I wish we’d chosen somewhere else from the start. It’s the cheapest in Decatur, but so many horrible things happened that I can’t even begin to describe them. The staff were so unkind and hateful toward us, even though we were almost always at work. I’m not thankful for Stay Lodge. 0/10 experience, my guy.
