The last straw came when I tried to renew for another 10 days and was told the rate had gone up 40% because it was “the season.” The snow hadn’t even finished melting. When I asked if the higher price meant the doors, breakfast, or ice machine would be fixed, the manager got offended and started yelling. I packed up and moved across the street to the Red Roof Inn, next to a 7-Eleven, across from the racetrack, and right by a weed dispensary. At least there, you don’t have to walk the halls to get high. The hallway smelled like a dispensary at midnight. Side doors failed to open with room keys about 80% of the time, which meant a scenic thousand-foot walk around the building, especially annoying with groceries. Breakfast was listed as available from 7:30 to 10:00, but before 8:00 the night clerk was still setting it up slowly. The powdered scrambled eggs were lukewarm at best. Bacon and sausage were hit or miss, and pancakes or waffles depended on someone being in the mood. Toast was available if you wanted to use a toaster that worked on only one side for weeks before dying, then took five days to replace. There was exactly one ice machine in the hotel, and staff didn’t know how to operate it. They sent people to the bar for ice, even though there was a QR code with instructions. The general manager deserves a trophy for crisis management, but shouldn’t have to spend all day dealing with fires that shouldn’t exist. I saw him show the owner everything that needed fixing, but when the owner opened his wallet, a moth flew out. That told me what I needed to know about the penny-pinching. It felt like the hotel was held together with duct tape and denial. You might be happy there if your expectations are at absolute zero.
