Staying right in downtown Durango made the weekend simple. We could walk to shops, restaurants, and along Main Avenue without moving the car. For our anniversary, the Strater Hotel gave us the romantic getaway we wanted. The room felt cozy and thoughtfully furnished, and the staff were welcoming, attentive, and proud of the hotel’s history. The whole property is well maintained. With its Victorian details, antique furnishings, and creaky wood floors, the hotel feels warm and intimate, like stepping into another era. It’s authentic, not staged, and full of character. We’re already talking about coming back.

I didn’t sleep especially well, mostly because I’d read the hotel was haunted. That’s on me. Still, I’d recommend the Strater without hesitation if you like historic hotels with stories and real character. It dates to 1887, and the Victorian style and rich details make it feel like stepping back in time. We also went down to the Diamond Belle Saloon, where there was a great live band, good cocktails, and a fun old-West atmosphere that didn’t feel cheesy.

The rooms were good, and the location was amazing, with dedicated parking and good restaurants on the ground floor. The history gives the place a royal feel. I wish they had AC instead of only a heater. They asked us to open the windows for cooling, which was hard to manage. A mini fridge and microwave would have been nice for our family room. There are no lifts to the first floor, just 4/5 stairs, so luggage may need to be carried. The jacuzzi wasn’t working during my visit, which was a letdown.

The location was very convenient and central, and the hotel itself was beautiful and well kept. Our room was lovely, with plenty to look at in this antique property. There’s a bar and two restaurants, though the food was just okay. We stayed four nights, but the front desk staff didn’t seem interested in giving us a tour or answering questions. The hospitality wasn’t great, and it didn’t feel welcoming. No one checked in during our stay to see how things were going.

When I was four, my mom and I stayed here, and seeing what I believe was the original owner, Henry strater, became one of my core memories. I’d gladly pay 300 dollars today for another chance to see that distinguished gentleman and hear his wife’s music. I saw what I believe were ghosts with my own eyes, and haven’t had to wonder whether they’re real. If you didn’t have that experience, maybe you’re less open to it than you think. I had such a good time that I still remember it 30 years later, and I look forward to coming back on my next vacation. The hotel is about its rich history and the chance of supernatural experiences, not comfort or amenities. The staff are taught to encourage that experience. People complaining about amenities should book a motel 6. I’m appalled by reviews from entitled, unappreciative people. Don’t let those pompous nobodies shape what you do.
