Best Western Markita Inn

The building looked run down, with an unpleasant parking lot and no cars around. It reminded me of a poorly renovated motel that might once have rented rooms by the hour, and the photos seemed to have been worked over with AI. I have stayed at Best Westerns before, and this place was nothing like them. I wouldn't recommend it, and would give a negative rating if I could. I felt uneasy as we drove in and didn't see any security. I checked us in anyway, but after talking it over with my friend, we left for another place. When I asked about a refund, I was told to contact the third party. They called the hotel, but the manager refused. I called the next day and he kept repeating that we should have cancelled 24 hours ahead. He was rude and didn't seem to care that I feared for my safety.

The room was cleaner than I'd expected for such an old place, and that was one thing I can't fault. Still, I wouldn't stay here with my wife. I kept my pistol by the bed, and an old man asked me for cigarettes while I was carrying things in. All the doors open right onto the parking lot. Lots of construction workers stay here, and big work trucks were coming and going at all hours. At 2 a.m. a guy slammed the doors and tailgate of his dually just outside my room and woke me up. The property is also on a busy street, so traffic noise is bad.

The staff couldn't have been nicer. She let us check in early, and the room was clean with a comfortable bed. But it smelled so strongly of cleaner that it burned my nose. We turned off the A/C, then got hot with the smell still hanging around. The carpet was extremely black. We were there overnight on a trip to Buc-ee’s and hoped to use the pool and hot tub. We were told they were closed for the season, though the website hadn't mentioned a seasonal pool, and it was nearly 90 degrees outside. A couple of people at the motel also asked us for money, so the neighborhood felt iffy. I'm not sure we'd stay again.

An old-fashioned motel setup, with clean rooms and a decent breakfast. The price was reasonable, and it's on a major street with easy access. I'd stay here again.
