Comfort Inn University Durham - Chapel Hill

I’m working in the Raleigh area and will look for another Comfort Inn. I usually find Comfort Inn comfortable, as the name suggests. The beds are comfortable, there are plenty of pillows, the rooms were clean, and the front desk lady was super nice. I needed an early check-in because I’m working nights right now. The internet situation really bothers me. Comfort Inn treats bandwidth like it’s a limited resource. This location uses Spectrum and caps downloads at 10Mbps. Uploads burst up to 22Mbps, then level off at 10Mbps. Faster service costs extra. It’s 2026, people, wake up! You can’t even watch a 1080p/60 video without buffering. This is the only hotel chain still milking this. Pathetic! In 2026, give us at least 25Mbps. For a few dollars more I can stay somewhere nicer and get 250Mbps. You have Spectrum. It’s more than capable!

The towels and sheets in our room were filthy, with blood and poop stains on almost every towel. Either they don’t know how to do laundry properly, or they’re too cheap to buy new ones. If you ask for towels, they only allow two of everything, even if you’re a family of four. You have to go downstairs and ring the bell over and over, hoping someone is there. The same goes for plates and forks, only two of each. Cleaning was unreliable. You fill out a form saying what you want cleaned and what you need in your room, then hang it on the door. The form says to leave by 11am, but after the room wasn’t cleaned, the front desk told us we needed to leave by 8:30 in the morning. Who’s realistically waking up and leaving that early? Over the past 3-4 days, we left by 8:30am and gave housekeeping until 3pm, but still came back to an uncleaned room. Sometimes they just removed the sign and left a bag of bath amenities without cleaning. The staff were bad, stingy, and gave no customer service. I’m sure they’ll reply to this review as though the service is good, but once you’ve rented a room and settled in, you’ll see how poor it is. By then your money is already locked in, you can’t get it back, and they won’t care.

The staff made this Comfort Inn feel like a luxury hotel, even though there are plenty of nicer places. Kimberly, Devan (hopefully I’m spelling their names correctly), and the other front desk lady were all great. She was on top of things when we had trouble with our room cards, and housekeeping took care of anything we needed. You can tell this staff enjoys their work and creates a real family atmosphere. They deserve recognition for representing the company so well, and I hope the owners/shareholders give them some. Devan had breakfast ready every morning, sharp. There was bacon, eggs, waffles, Greek yogurt, juice, grits, hash rounds, and sausage. On Saturday, game day, whenever food got low, he brought out more so everyone could get enough. The only problem was the snack and soda vending machines. None of them fully worked on any floor, but that’s down to the vendor/ownership, not the staff. We stay in hotels at least twice a month for work, and we’ll definitely come back to this Comfort Inn because of how wonderful the staff made our stay.

Getting to UNC is easy, less than 15 minutes to campus, and the hotel sits right off the interstate with lots of restaurants nearby and straightforward access to Chapel Hill and Durham. The room was nice overall and the bed very comfortable. The bathroom badly needs updating, though, and breakfast was solid but nothing special. The coffee setup could be better. My only location complaint is that this stretch of I-40 can get extremely clogged, making it hard to reach other parts of the Raleigh metro area. Still, it’s a very good value and I’d probably stay here again.
