The bay views and location were the best parts. We were away from the crowded tourist areas, and the Death’s Door boat tour we took on Saturday was great. Shoreline Restaurant had beautiful views, though the service was horrendous and the food was mediocre. Our room was clean, but the mildew smell was overpowering, and the property looked neglected, with a ladder leaning against the building and a huge patch of weeds beside our room. We joked that it looked like a horror movie location. The beds were okay but clearly old and worn. If you have mobility issues, be aware that the toilet is incredibly low, almost like it was made for a child. I travel with my service dog, who wears a bright pink vest with large lettering identifying her as a service dog. We were charged $150 for an “unannounced dog.” When I told the owner she was a service dog, I got pushback about why I hadn’t mentioned something so important. ADA laws don’t require you to announce a service dog, and we’ve never had to do so in all our travels at high-end hotels and Airbnb’s. The owner could have asked us about the dog before charging us. Thankfully, the charge was reversed. Would I come back? Probably not unless they do some upkeep and make improvements.

The location worked well for us since we’d been looking for somewhere to stay in gills Rock, and the price was good. I’d stay again in this room, though I’d be curious to see the others. Our harbor view room only offered a small glimpse of the harbor from one window, plus a bit of a view from the private porch, so the view was pretty limited. Having a parking space just for our room was a nice perk. Inside, there was a very comfortable king bed, a couch, two chairs, and a little table for meals. The shower was great, with two kinds of shower heads, and we liked having the small porch. The decor felt a little plain. Neither the two chairs for watching TV nor the pair at the table were especially comfortable.

We had plenty to do nearby, and the sunset view was amazing. The room was great and parking was easy. A great vacation spot!

The stairs up to the second floor were the only part that needed some care. We left our luggage downstairs so we wouldn’t have to carry it up and down. Otherwise, our stay in the Troll Hole cottage at the back was so cozy. The little deck off the back porch was lovely at night, and there was enough firewood for a campfire on our last evening. The beds were very comfortable, and the air conditioner kept the cottage cool all three days. The kitchenette had all the essentials, and the bathroom was fully stocked, so we didn’t need to unpack our shampoo or body wash. The structure is old, but they did a great job remodeling the inside while keeping the home’s style intact. The woman who checked us in was so nice and friendly. We also enjoyed the main room in the big house, where they had pamphlets about local activities. I’d highly recommend staying here!

Our room above the front porch was spacious and clean, with a great shower. The porch and quiet setting were lovely for watching the sunset and relaxing after exploring Door County. The hosts were amazing, knew the area well, and were genuinely interested in helping us find things to do. They even helped us after the trip when we realized we’d left something behind. Their service really impressed us. We love the outdoors, and Newport State Park was a highlight. It felt like our own beach, with very few people around and beautiful views. We were also particularly impressed by the two county parks along the Bay, just south of Gills Rock. We stayed two nights this summer.
