Springhill Suites by Marriott Erie

I’ve stayed here twice now, and I’ll keep coming back whenever I visit family in Erie. Family members recommended it after having the same kind of experience I did. The hotel is very clean, the staff are friendly, and breakfast is great. The location is handy, close to I 79, shopping, restaurants, and the Bayfront, which is a great place to visit. Definitely five stars.

We came to Erie for a wedding and stayed three nights so we could fit in some bike rides at Presque Isle. Everything was perfect. Our room was spotless and very quiet, and breakfast was delicious. The staff were great, especially Kimmi and Bonny. I can’t remember the breakfast staff’s names, but they were excellent too. Kudos for a perfect visit!

The doors slam so loudly that it was all we could hear through the night and morning. By the next morning we’d had enough and checked out early: the pool, which opens at 6, was closed for shock treatment, and the gym smelled so moldy and musty we couldn’t even go in. My husband and I were both having a hard time breathing. We were on the first floor, in Room 133, and I don’t know if this is only a problem on that floor. We’d already had trouble getting a king suite ready. We asked for it to be available at 3, but waited in the lobby until nearly 4 with three other guests, and nobody could say when any of the suites would be ready. There was strong perfume from a deodorizing spray in the lobby. In the hallway, the musty smell was so bad it was hard to breathe. The room smelled intensely of bleach, so we had to leave the window open for hours. We couldn’t use the air conditioner or heat because they had the same musty odor as the hall. Then the TV wouldn’t work, just showing a black screen. I went back to the front desk for help, but they said it would take a while because there was a long line and only one person seemed to be working. I found that the cable box was unplugged and got the TV working before anyone came up. We slept with the window open to get fresh air. I’d read a lot of good reviews and only a few bad ones, so I felt I should share what happened.

Check-in was quick, and the attendant was pleasant. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, and it was quiet enough to sleep well. Breakfast was good, and the coffee was better than at most places we’ve stayed. One of the TVs didn’t work, and the bathroom could use some attention. Still, it was a pleasant stay, and I’d come back.
