Eugene Whiteaker International Hostel

I had a nice stay in a homey place, with common areas and a large backyard. The women's dorm was a neat little annex to a larger dorm, with just two beds and no lockers. The kitchen was fully equipped, and the provided foodstuff was enough to make a copious breakfast, which was a big plus. Staff were friendly and helpful, though the front desk wasn’t always staffed when I needed assistance. Having to use my cell phone was annoying because I was roaming from another country and it cost $$$$$. A guest phone for those situations might be a good idea. The place was generally clean, despite a clogged shower-tub drain. My towel was full of lint too, and after drying off I looked like I had chest hair.

My first hostel stay was a great experience. I’d wanted to spend less and stay in a community setting, and Eugene Lodge didn’t disappoint. It was easy to connect with the joyful, communicative staff and other guests. People were there to share stories and enjoy each other’s company, and one of my favorite nights was hanging out around the fire with guests and staff. The staff worked hard to keep everything clean. The free breakfast saved me a lot of money, and I could cook eggs, make toast, or pancakes. It was very hot while I was there, but I still slept comfortably, which says a lot in Eugene, where places aren’t built to be air-conditioned.

I feel bad giving this hostel less than five stars because I enjoyed 99% of my stay. It’s clean, welcoming, and well run, with an atmosphere that’s comfortable but organized. The polite, professional staff give each new guest a quick, helpful tour, and the common areas have useful furniture and essentials, plus friendly fellow travelers. An issue at the end of my stay was handled poorly. That’s why I gave service four stars and the overall stay three. It may be unlikely another traveler will have the same bad experience, and I’d still recommend it for hostel-style lodging.

The location wasn’t the best, and the bed was too soft, but those things were easy to overlook because the service team was awesome and friendly. They had all kinds of activities and a complimentary breakfast too. If you’re passing through Eugene, give them a try.
