The Inn at 2nd & C

We booked a large suite on the fourth floor for a winter getaway, and it suited us well. The website makes the room sizes clear, since the lower-floor rooms are tiny. The Eagle House carries the timber baron history of the Humboldt coast, with Gallagher's and Phatsy Kline's right inside. AA Bar & Grill and Shanty are close enough to walk to, and other Eureka sights are walkable too, with coastal outdoor adventures an easy drive away. It’s welcoming to gay, queer, and everyone-friendly guests. Still, Eureka isn’t for everyone. If dive bars, corned beef, comedy clubs, and history aren’t your thing, you may want to stay elsewhere on a road trip. This block feels rough, with a men’s shelter across the street, and room service is only available upon request. Carver House and Pinc Lady have more charm and less riff-raff. By ordinary standards, this place might get one star, but those upsides earned it five from me.

Our room was spotless and clearly well cared for, which surprised us in such a historic building and town. We spent two nights here while exploring the Redwoods Forest on our honeymoon, and the inn exceeded what we expected. We had a spacious suite that felt like being in a museum. The staff were welcoming and helpful, and the complimentary breakfast was a nice extra. I felt safe walking around town, though you should keep an eye on your surroundings. Nobody bothered us.

The room felt like a setting for a Charles Dickens story, with a picture of the Dutchess of Cumberland watching over me 😂. It was my first stay in a 19th-century inn, and stepping inside felt like entering the Victorian age. The Eagle House dates to 1888 and is in Old Town Eureka, mixing Victorian charm with modern touches. They say ghosts live there. I saw shadows, but figured it was probably my imagination 🤷🏾‍♀️😂. Charming and cozy.

The location worked perfectly for us. We could easily walk to the town’s most interesting shops and restaurants, and we felt safe the whole time. The staff were kind, capable, and helpful with everything we needed. Our room was comfortable and pretty, balancing Victorian character with modern amenities. We had a truly lovely stay at this beautiful inn. Highly recommended for a visit to Eureka/Arcata!
