The bed was comfortable, and I slept fine, but the pillows were flat and sad. The room was tiny and worn, and the shower felt so unclean that I wore slides. Cleanliness needs serious attention. The smell hit me as soon as I walked in, like an old ashtray left in a closed car all summer. I stayed at Hotel Aspen in Flagstaff, and it wasn’t a good experience. Maybe it works if you only need somewhere to crash for a few hours and don’t care about the condition, but if you’re hoping for a cozy, fresh place, I’d look elsewhere.

The rooms were decent and spacious, but service was below par and the stay felt very average at best. We booked three rooms and none were close together. Construction blocked the nearest route to one of them. Our keys kept failing and had to be replaced. There was no turndown service the first day, then someone knocked pretty early the next day to ask about it, and I didn’t even have a do not disturb placard for the door. There were no ice buckets, though they offered a bag for the ice machine. Two of the three microwaves were broken. Cleaning staff were allowed to park in do not park zones, which limited disabled guests’ access to their vehicles. It was a strange experience, and I wouldn’t return. I plan to stay somewhere else next time.

When we’re in Flagstaff, we’ve stayed here a few times and it’s always been a nice experience. The rooms are clean, the water gets very hot, the beds are comfortable, and the pool is welcoming on warmer afternoons. My only complaint is that there isn’t a real person in the office.

The TV remote has no guide, so you have to flip through every channel to see what’s on. That’s annoying, especially since even the bargain motel 6 has one. The bigger problem is the pet charge. At check-in I was told there’d be a $25 pet fee, which I understood as a one-time charge. I renewed twice without anyone mentioning more fees. Today, when I renewed again, I was told it’s $25 per night, or $350 for a two-week stay. I clean up after my pet and myself and do my own daily room refreshing, so I’m not sure what the charge is for. There are dozens of motels within five miles in Flag that don’t add fees, so don’t waste your money here if you have a pet and are staying more than a few nights. It’s a shame customer service doesn’t seem to come first. I might have stayed the whole month, but now I have to check out this week. Judging by the empty cars area on the upper level, they have plenty of vacancies and need the business, but they’re losing mine.

For the price, the room was decent, but there were a few problems. The jacuzzi had lots of tangled hair in it, so make sure to clean the shower and jacuzzi before using them. They charge guests if dishes aren’t washed, yet there were no paper towels or tissue and nowhere to air-dry the dishes. I’m not sure how they expect people to wash and dry them that way. There were also very few trash cans, and surprisingly, not even one in the bathroom.
