Courtyard Greenville Downtown

We’d happily stay at Courtyard by Marriott Greenville Downtown again. It’s right in the middle of downtown, with lots of restaurants and shops an easy walk away. Our room was roomy and comfortable, and the hotel felt modern, clean, and well cared for. For the location and quality, it was good value.

The rooms were underwhelming, and a long list of problems made the stay feel poorly managed. There was mold in the bathroom, and stains, water, and hair in the room were never dealt with, leaving us feeling like we’d been given an unclean room and management didn’t care. The phone also had blinking red lights that the front desk couldn’t turn off or attend to, and requested room service never came despite our staying multiple nights. The restaurant and bar staff were attentive, and the location was great.

I picked the Courtyard over The Loft because it cost $20 less per night, even though I’d wanted to try that Marriott brand for the first time. At checkout, another $20 per night for parking showed up. Nobody mentioned it at check-in, and in all my 476 Marriott stays as a Lifetime Gold member, I’ve never been charged for parking. Maybe it’s technically disclosed, but only in small print on a page you have to click through, so it’s easy to miss. I filed a report with the FTC, number 196863576.

The fifth-floor room had such a strong musty smell that I went right out to buy air freshener. It reminded me of a flooded old farmhouse basement, damp carpet and all, and that odor left the biggest impression from my brief stay. A quick online search turned up similar complaints from other guests, so it may be an ongoing problem. The TV also kept turning off and restarting every 10-15 minutes. The staff were exceptionally welcoming, the property looked pleasant, and the location just off Main Street made it easy to walk to restaurants, bars, and nightlife. Still, I’d probably stay elsewhere next time I’m in Greenville because of the room smell.
