Best Western Plus Inn of Hayward

The cockroach Friday morning was the last straw. My friend found one crawling on the wall, tried to kill it, then scooped it into a cup to take to the desk. The front desk seemed completely unsurprised and just offered another room, as though roaches only stay in one room and never get into the others or the kitchen where they serve complimentary breakfast. After telling the family we were traveling with, we all decided to leave. The young woman at the desk that morning was helpful, and my husband and I had no trouble cancelling the rest of our stay. With everything that went wrong, we should’ve been offered a full refund, not just refunded for the days we cancelled. We weren’t surprised, though, since the hotel doesn’t even let guests keep the room cool while they’re out. Find a different hotel. We booked in February for July 24-28 and requested rooms next to the family we were traveling with, who booked at the same time. A week before the trip, they called to confirm and were told the rooms would be beside each other. At check-in, the woman said they couldn’t confirm that and she didn’t know why anyone had said they could. It was their busy season, especially that weekend, but we had booked months earlier, so this felt like poor planning. We weren’t even on the same floor. The traffic noise was so loud that the hotel provided earplugs, and our overhead light flickered before going out. There’s also a policy to charge $150 if you leave lights or the AC on when you leave the room. That’s outrageous when you’re paying to use the room. We didn’t know the neighborhood and found it unsafe, which was frustrating with children.

We booked two nights but left twenty minutes after checking in and went to another hotel. We were still charged for one night. The room smelled so bad we didn’t even want to sit on the bed. The pool was visible from our room, but the water was green and looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in a while, so I wouldn’t get in even if someone paid me. The front desk was super friendly, but when we walked past housekeeping and said hello, they didn’t respond or even look our way. There were sketchy people outside when we arrived, and people walking around in just towels when we left. One of the worst hotels I’ve stayed in, and I’ve stayed in a few.

The rooms were nicely maintained, and the staff was helpful. A nice hotel and a satisfactory stay.

It’s been remodeled since I was here years ago, and it was nice to see the changes. The location is convenient, right off the 880 highway, with food and shopping within walking distance. Staff were welcoming, rooms were clean, and it was quiet. There’s a pool and hot tub, plus breakfast in the morning and coffee in the lobby all day. Highly recommend.
