Motel 6 Helena

The staff were very nice, including the housekeeper who came in the first morning after saying her information showed we’d checked out. My son liked the shower, and I liked how cold the refrigerator got. The price was cheap, which is why I booked, and I’m sorry for the poor review, Tom, but this motel needs repairs and updates. We’d asked for two beds and weren’t booking at the last minute, yet the only rooms left were smoking rooms. We accepted that, since I’m used to a burnt spot or a slight smoke smell and just wanted to rest and shower. But it was noisy, with people coming and going all night and morning. The air conditioner and heat pump above the door only made fan noises, never cooled the room, and seemed to make it hotter. We had to leave the window open for all three nights. Since we were in the smoking section, someone stood outside our window smoking and talking at 4:15 a.m. and 7 a.m. on the first two mornings. We left at 3:30 a.m. on the third day and couldn’t take it anymore. I don’t know if that person was out there again at 4 and 7.

We got a call the day before arrival, as we were preparing for a six-hour planned drive, saying they’d overbooked and asking if we could do without the requested fridge and microwave. I agreed since we wouldn’t arrive until midnight and were leaving early. When we got there after midnight, the room looked like someone had lived in it for a week. The fridge they did provide was so dirty that I was glad we’d bought a last-minute cooler. The microwave was filthy too, with a huge dent that made us afraid to use it. Crumbs were on top and around the fridge, and the room clearly hadn’t been vacuumed or inspected. There were food crumbs, dirt, and napkins on the carpet and under the beds. The bathroom had a man’s shaving stubble, barely any toilet paper on the roll, no backup on the toilet, and dirt and hair on the back of the seat. We pulled back the covers expecting to find bugs, but the beds looked clean. We slept, got up, and left right away. I showed the head of housekeeping the mess, and she seemed surprised and apologized. They offered a gift certificate for a free night at any other Motel 6, which I declined, so they gave me $40.

I came back to see family, and they made the stay easy and simple. The room was clean, the area was decent, and the motel attendants were polite and nice to talk to. I’m no snob, but I do have standards, and it was easy to ask for whatever we needed during the extended stay. The price was right, too. I’ll stay again when I roll through town.

I booked two beds, but it seems the automatic scheduling system switched me to one. Someone in my family, including me, had to take turns sleeping on the floor. I know things happen, but it still bothered me.
