D. Hotel Suites & Spa

We live in southern Mass, with two kids in the pioneer valley, and this is our usual place to stay overnight instead of sleeping on air mattresses. We always try to book a room with a fireplace. The spa massages fill up really fast, so book well ahead. We waited too long and couldn't find anything, even a week before.

The staff are friendly, and breakfast was decent. The mattress, though, was sunken and squishy and clearly needs replacing, and the room fixtures need some care. One day the maid made the bed and left fresh towels but didn’t clean the bathroom. The location is awkward: it’s right by the freeway, so trucks make noise all night, yet it’s not near an exit. Getting on or off the freeway, or driving into Northampton or Holyoke, takes ages.

We had a lovely room and a perfect night’s stop on our road trip. For one night, the price was amazing for the warm welcome, comfort, and chance to recharge. I’d highly recommend the hotel and the restaurant next door.

We came for a family event at the Delaney House and stayed in a first-floor accessible suite. I can’t remember the last time I saw a hotel in such poor shape. After walking barefoot around the room, I found my feet were dirty. A damp towel wiped them black. Later, on the way to the back parking lot, we saw the entry mat covered in dried leaves. I told the front desk, and an employee said he’d pass it along, but it was still there more than a day later. The next morning there was no hot shower. I let the water run for 15 minutes, and it only got lukewarm. I couldn’t shower before the event, and the soap they provided was so tiny it would have been hard to get clean. The property had other obvious upkeep problems too: dirty entrances, grimy windows, and a room that needed a deep clean. It seems they count on guests coming for events at the Delaney House and let basic maintenance slide. After this stay, I’d look for somewhere else in the area.
