We arrived after flying in from out of state and took an Uber to the hotel. Two women greeted us and asked for ID, which I gladly showed them. Their manner changed as soon as they asked where my car was. I explained I’d flown in and taken an Uber, and one quickly handed back my ID, said they couldn’t rent to me, and told my daughter and me to leave. It was 36 degrees and getting colder, with snow and ice everywhere, so even walking was hazardous. I tried several things, including offering my sister’s vehicle information since she was nearby, but they still said no. A cheer competition was happening the next day, which is why we were in town, and every other hotel in the area was booked. We were left without a room because I didn’t have a car.

Rebel is always working hard and gives her best each time she’s on the job. She’s kind, compassionate, and a great listener. There’s someone who cuts the grass, but I’ve also seen her go out of her way to pull weeds. Not every employee takes that kind of care. If you stop by and she’s there, let her know she’s appreciated.

The bed was comfortable, and despite being a roadside lodge, the room wasn’t noisy. The towels were thin, though. The clerk was pleasant, check-in was easy, and they sent kind welcome and thank-you emails. My room was across the parking lot from the office, and I had trouble getting in with the key, so the clerk came to help. A lodge resident helped me again later that evening. The motel itself wasn’t bad, just motel quality. I’m kicking myself for not researching it, since the name gave me a fancier impression. Waze announced that I’d arrived without making it clear which side of the street it was on. An image search showed it was across the road from where I’d been looking and connected with a T-Rex lounge. It’s a little way from the main attractions, but about a mile from the convention center if that’s where you’re going.

Rebel was the best part of our stay. She was sweet, attentive, offered to bring anything we needed after hours, and followed through by bringing towels when we told her the room had none. The motel is in a decent area where we felt safe, the parking lot is lit, and you can walk to some places, downtown Hot Springs in 15-20 minutes, or the casino in about half an hour. The room was warm, and at $60 it worked as a one-night budget place. I would have had a hard time staying longer. Outside, paint was peeling from the doors, but the recently redone room was better than I expected, though very bare-bones: no microwave, fridge, towels at first, or toilet paper holder. Our door was the main problem. It could be pushed open without a key or any force. From outside, it only sometimes locked if we pulled hard while jiggling the handle, and we didn’t feel our belongings were safe. We could deadbolt it if we pulled on the handle while bolting it, but that was a hassle.

This was the nastiest place we’ve ever tried to stay. I’ve set boots in 25 foreign countries, and nowhere we’ve seen was worse. The first room smelled so bad we could hardly breathe. When I asked for another, they gave us one with rat-chewed door trim and bits all over the floor. The woman at the desk was extremely rude. We left because of the filthy rooms and her attitude. I’d rather spend the night in prison. Horrible.
