La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Houston West Park 10

I canceled the reservation because too many things were wrong, even though the receptionist who finally appeared was really nice. The TVs weren’t working, which wasn’t a big deal by itself, but added to the other issues. When I first arrived, no one was at the front desk. I waited about five minutes and called the hotel, but nobody answered. There was a very loud humming, so I walked around the corner and found a refrigerator with a note saying it was out of order. Someone showed up after about ten minutes. One good thing is that canceling online was quite simple.

The price was great, and the front desk woman was incredible. She went above and beyond checking us in late and helping whenever our keys stopped working. Everyone we met was kind. I hate leaving a bad review, but there were too many problems to overlook, and I think paying a little more for somewhere clean, comfortable, and functional is the better choice. The whole hotel smelled like weed. The electrical setup seemed questionable: one switch controlled all the lights and outlets, so turning the lights off also stopped the phone from charging. Some outlets had exposed wiring. The room doors were hard to close, the bathroom door wouldn’t lock, and the front elevator was broken, so we had to walk all the way to the back. The back elevator sounded like it was grinding against the walls whenever it moved, and didn’t feel safe. There was hardly any lighting outside, which felt creepy at night. None of the back doors opened, so we had to use the front every time. Shower pressure was weak and the water never got hot, just lukewarm at best. The room phone didn’t work, and there were groups of dead gnats in several spots. The beds were old and lumpy. I booked a king but got a full, and the TV was tiny. The whole place felt worn out.

I’ve always liked LA Quinta, but this one was a huge disappointment, and I wouldn’t recommend either this hotel or Wyndham rewards. We booked hoping for a nice change, but management tried to charge us even though our rewards had paid for the room. Wyndham rewards also refused my request for at least a partial refund of the points and dismissed my concerns when I called, so I couldn’t salvage the trip. The front elevator was broken, and our first room was on the fourth floor. It took ten minutes to get from our room to the office. The hotel TVs were so small that I couldn’t watch the whole trip because I didn’t have my glasses. Wyndham rewards claims to be the best rewards service available, but they lied.

The woman at the front desk was amazing, friendly, patient, and helpful, even though she had to keep reprogramming our malfunctioning key cards. Everyone we met was kind, which makes me feel bad about leaving a poor review. The price was appealing, but kindness didn’t make up for the condition of the hotel. I’d spend a little more for somewhere clean, comfortable, and safe. The building smelled strongly of weed.
