SureStay Plus Hotel by Best Western Humble

This was my second stay, and I wouldn't recommend the hotel. Roaches in the room were already a serious cleanliness concern. I also came across what looked like snakes on or near the property, which left me feeling unsafe and very uncomfortable. A hotel should feel like somewhere you can relax, but this was the opposite. The condition of the place and the pest issues make it seem like maintenance and sanitation aren't being taken seriously. For what it costs, basic cleanliness and safety should be a given, and this place failed at both. I'd strongly advise staying somewhere else.

Joe at the front desk turned a rough start into a good short stay. I arrived late after driving over three hours on I-10 through brutal Houston traffic, exhausted, and he made check-in quick and pleasant. I was skeptical of an affordable hotel near the highway, despite its high rating compared with similar low-cost places. My first room faced the highway, which was so close you could throw a paper airplane toward it, and smelled strongly of ammonia. I figured it had just been cleaned, but I still found the smell unpleasant. I put up with it the first night because I was tired. Otherwise, the room was acceptable: a huge bed, plenty of space, everything squeaky clean, and a decent-sized refrigerator. The next evening, my last at the hotel, I told Joe about the problems. Even though their system was giving them trouble, he did what he could to move me to a room facing away from the highway. The first replacement room's FOB reader was dead, so I had to make a few trips back to the desk. The new room had no ammonia smell or highway noise, and the difference was night and day. I slept well on the comfortable, spacious bed, then had an easy checkout with a lovely young female receptionist the next morning. There's also a guest directory on the desk in each room. I really recommend reading it, especially if you're staying more than a couple of nights. It covers everything you'd need to know about the hotel and then some. They even offer things I didn't expect, like postage stamps for sale. I work at a hotel too, and I'll suggest to my boss that we print our own directory. I'd recommend this place to budget travelers who want to be near the airport and right next to a gas station without giving up good service and amenities.

At $58 a night, my room came with a microwave, refrigerator, couch, and continental breakfast. As a woman traveling alone, I felt safe in the room because the door had both a deadbolt and a latch at the top. It was noisy at times, but for that price I'm not complaining. I'd read that breakfast was really good, and I agree. I enjoyed it every morning. I absolutely loved my stay. Thank you!

The room was clean and well kept, with a small fridge and Keurig, and the glass-enclosed shower and bathroom fixtures were spotless. They provided little bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. The toilet sits quite low, though, which might be difficult for someone with limited mobility. I spotted one tiny fly or gnat, but it didn't change my impression of the room's cleanliness. The bed was a strange combination of extremely firm and wobbly, and uncomfortable. The wooden frame stuck out near the edge, so it seemed easy to bruise yourself on it. The air conditioner worked but struggled on a particularly warm night. In the lobby, an overpowering marijuana smell lingered into the hallways, and the room had a faint trace of it too. The front reception area is enclosed in glass. Arriving late felt uneasy with little street lighting and occasional loiterers around. Breakfast was adequate but underwhelming, with pork options like bacon and sausage, waffles, and muffins. The coffee was hot and flavorful, and an attentive staff member kept the dining area tidy. It's a passable place for a short stay, with useful in-room conveniences and good basic cleanliness, but the lobby odor, uncomfortable mattress, and nighttime safety concerns make it hard to recommend without reservations. Guest comfort and security need work.
