American Inn Independence

The room was nightmarish, even though the lobby at the Independence location looked modern and clean. My boyfriend and I had been there less than twenty minutes when we spotted blood splatters in several places and a big clump of human hair behind the TV. We took photos and went straight to the front desk. The attendant treated us terribly. She asked housekeeping to verify what we’d seen despite the photos, and kept saying she could move us but wouldn’t refund us. Then she implied we looked like we had nowhere to go, as if we were homeless. Her flat manner made an already disturbing situation worse. When we asked about a supervisor or corporate office, she said, “This is it here,” and handed us the hotel’s own phone number and address. She also refused to give her name. She was elderly and very blonde. I’ve never been treated so badly or had such a horrible experience anywhere in my life.

I travel every week, and this was the worst hotel I’ve stayed in. The bathroom sink drained painfully slowly, there was no coffee pot in the room, and the towels we asked for Friday night never showed up. My feet were black from walking on the carpet, and there were strange people just hanging around in the parking lot. I wasn’t expecting much, but this was awful. I’d never recommend it.

After about two hours in the room, I found a roach and took it right to the front desk to ask for a refund. They wouldn’t offer even part of one. The staff were inconsiderate and unhelpful. The lobby had made the hotel seem like it might be decent, but I was unimpressed as soon as I entered the room. It was nasty, and I’d never tell anyone to stay here.

The lobby looked nice when we stopped in while looking for a hotel in Kansas City, but the room was a shock. It had a stale, old smell, and I’m sure I’ll never stay here again. We’d just stayed at the other American Inn in S.D. and had a much better experience there: they were really nice, with a coffee pot, hairdryer, and more than one towel each. That other place also had a really great breakfast, and the rooms cost less.
