Breakfast was consistently good, and the morning team were always attentive. We also enjoyed tasty poolside lunches, great drinks at Shipwreck Bar, and polite pool staff who were quick with orders. Dinners at Moana were excellent, with plenty of choices and local fish. One dinner there was slow, but the staff apologized the next day, understood the problem, and wanted to make it right. A Food and Beverage manager spoke with us personally. This was our second visit to Kona Village, and after staying at several Rosewood properties, this is our favorite. The staff are incredibly attentive overall, the grounds are beautifully maintained, and bikes make it easy to get around the large property. We'll be back.
The rebuild's attention to detail is remarkable. In our room, every surface I noticed was solid hardwood, natural stone, or another natural fiber, right down to the walls, ceilings, and the wooden covering on the metal sliding door to the lanai. It gives the place a luxurious but understated feel, with a strong local character. Each hale is its own standalone building, so it felt quiet, private, and serene. The staff were friendly and attentive everywhere, a 10 out of 10 for service. Kona Village has a fascinating history: it closed for 12 years after the 2011 tsunami damage, then reopened in 2023 after a complete rebuild. They did a remarkable job honoring and preserving Hawaiian culture and heritage. I don't often write reviews unless a hotel is exceptionally good or bad, and this one was definitely the former.
The suite upgrade gave us stunning lagoon views and a wonderfully quiet setting, and the rebuilt property itself is gorgeous, with floor to ceiling windows and an outdoor shower. Shanon, our bell man, was energetic, insightful, and superb, but we didn't get that same level of hospitality elsewhere. At Shipwreck, the bartender was friendly enough, though not as warm as you'd expect from a resort costing 1,500 USD a night. I'd enjoy her vibe at a brewery or dive bar. We ordered lots of sushi, and the chef comped us some pieces. The beachside bar was supposed to serve until 11pm. At 9pm it was empty, and as we started to leave, someone hurried over from the shadows. When we returned, they were clearing the register and said they were closed because people had called out. We understood, but when we asked where else to get a drink, the employee stammered and eventually said they didn't know. That felt sort of unacceptable from someone who worked there. The grounds are sprawling, so bikes are handy, but many we came across badly needed repair. Wobbly seats and handlebars are a bad combination. Breakfast was another letdown: the kind server said it would arrive in 40 minutes, but it took 70, and we had to call for an update. There was also one evening with slow service at dinner. The hard product is beautiful, but the hospitality warmth and attention to detail still aren't there. That warmth is part of what makes a five star resort feel like one. I wouldn't return to Kona Village because it lacked the welcoming service I wanted. Four Seasons fills that gap. If you're choosing between the two, go to Four Seasons and thank me later.
We loved snorkeling in the bay. It was some of the best we've experienced, like swimming in a tropical fish aquarium. There are plenty of amenities and activities, and the food was so good, especially the fresh fish. Every employee greeted us with good morning and a happy aloha, even in passing, and we felt they cared about our stay. A few times we walked next door to the four seasons for food and drinks, and the staff there didn't make us feel as welcome. We've stayed at a few other Rosewoods, but this one is our favorite by far. The property is thoughtfully designed, with a beautiful modern look that honors its past traditions. 10 out of 10. We'll be back.
The team made the stay stand out, from GM Daniel and spa director Theron to the waitstaff, bartenders, housekeeping, and grounds crew. Everyone went above and beyond. The property, service, amenities, and food and drinks were all excellent. A true five star experience. We can't wait to return!
