Best Western Plus Kalamazoo Suites

The rooms were spacious, with lots of comfortable seating, and the bed was comfortable too. They were cleaned well, though the rooms could use updating, which is my only reason for four stars. Breakfast had good options and was filling. The hot tub was small but relaxing, and the clean pool was big enough for a few laps. Lena at the desk was awesome. She found me a quiet room where I could read all weekend without being disturbed. The lobby was beautiful, and I could help myself to tea, coffee, or hot cocoa by the fireplace. The workout room was clean, and I made full use of the Peloton bike. I appreciated all the staff, and Lena deserves a special shout-out. I'll stay again.

The hot breakfast was the best surprise. At this level of hotel, those breakfasts can be underwhelming, but Best Western Plus did a great job. The eggs were cooked right, the potatoes and sausage links were good, and the sauteed onions and peppers made the eggs especially tasty. That breakfast turned what was about a 4.5-star stay into one I'd round up. We stayed overnight before music school auditions at WMU. The campus was less than a 10-minute drive on snowy streets. The rooms were spacious and clean, though the beds were just okay. If you're from out of town, Bilbo's Pizza and Sweetwaters Donuts are just down the street.

We chose this place so we could swim and use the hot tub after a hockey game, but a party had filled the pool beyond capacity with kids. Their parents watched through the lobby window instead of being in the pool area. I called down and was told they'd be out by 9 PM, with the pool closing at 10. After 9, there were still about a dozen screaming kids and one adult drinking in the hot tub. The kids ran through the halls, ignored people walking by, and left trash everywhere. There was yelling in the halls all night, and we could hear kids running overhead until 2 AM in our second-floor room. The elevator was broken, so we had to use the stairs to reach our other room on the fourth floor. The lobby was clean and staff were friendly. Breakfast was okay for a hotel, though the biscuits weren't fully cooked and the potatoes were cold. In one room, a light didn't work and the sofa bed had no linens until we asked. The other room had a broken bathroom door.

The rooms are good and clean, and the fitness center is good for a hotel. But the pool felt like ice, even though I was told it was heated. It needs to be at least 2-6 degrees warmer to be usable, unless you want a cold plunge. They failed to clean my room thoroughly twice, and breakfast never changes. It should change at least 2-3 times every seven days.
