The setting at Zachar Bay Lodge is stunning. We've traveled a lot and haven't seen a more beautiful place. It's very remote, around a gorgeous bay, and the camp is built around an old abandoned fish cannery, with photo opportunities all around, from the scenery to the wildlife and cannery. Our family of five had a fantastic trip in August 2024, and each of us loved it. It felt like being at a comfortable summer camp again. We were welcomed into the Eaton family right away and enjoyed time with every family member. The owner's brother flew us to camp, and they went to great lengths to get us there despite the weather. We spent most of our time on the boat halibut fishing and had a great time. We caught plenty of delicious halibut, which they filleted and packed for us to take home. We also saw whales, otters, bears, and all kinds of birds. We had a cabin to ourselves with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. There was plenty of hot water, and the beds were comfortable, which mattered to me because I have back problems.

The seaplane ride to and from the lodge was a highlight in itself. From above, you could see Fin Whales out in the ocean or mountain goats scrambling over nearby cliffs. We also went boating, caught halibut, and fished for cod and salmon and trout along the river. If you're lucky, you might spot a Kodiak Bear. I strongly recommend hiking the mountain around the property, though the terrain is challenging. The Eaton family members are experienced climbers. Each day felt like a new adventure, and Andy and his family were incredibly accommodating. Waking up to their home cooked breakfast while looking out over the Pacific was breathtaking. This was truly the trip of a lifetime.

My father has been to Zachar Bay Lodge eight times and has no plans to go anywhere else. Andy knows where the fish are, so the fishing success rate is incredible. You can even be selective and release the fish you don't want. Andy will spend the whole day on the water with you and point out the surrounding nature if you're interested. The rooms are neat, very clean, and quite nice. The food is wonderful too, thanks to Andys wife, who is a great chef. It's a family business, and everyone involved puts their heart and soul into giving guests a special experience. My dad doesn't speak English, but Andy adapts well to language barriers, and they always manage to understand each other. He takes very good care of my father. So if you don't speak the language, don't be afraid to book a trip to Andys Lodge. Andy will manage!

Andy and his wife Linda made the stay a great experience, and Chris was a very cheerful, capable assistant. The location is great, and their attitude is even better. They're always happy to go the extra mile. They have internet through starlink, and it works great if you need to stay in touch or get work done.

We caught halibut and cod, including one halibut that weighed 45 lbs, so we were thrilled with the day's catch. There was plenty else to do around Zachar Bay: we hiked near the lodge, beach combed for sea glass and sand dollars, and gathered drift wood to cook dinner over a beach fire. The food was plentiful, healthy, delicious, and made from scratch. One night we had Fish n Chips made from what we'd caught that day. The float plane ride to the lodge had incredible views, and the Eatons welcomed our family warmly. We got a full tour on arrival, heard fascinating stories about how Zachar Bay Lodge came to be, and visited the museum the Eatons made. ZBL is a real historical gem. Our bunk house was cozy and had all the essentials for a hospitable stay. The Eatons know a lot and gave us a memorable Alaskan experience that will last a lifetime.
