I first came here for work meetings years ago, then after a few stays realized it’s a great choice for a low-key family getaway. We don’t like crowds, so my husband and daughter started coming along, and now we visit several times a year. It’s become a family tradition. Sure, it’s a bit old-timey and somewhat rundown, but it has a lot of charm. The rooms are always clean, the staff are consistently nice, and we always have a good time. The balconies are a bonus. On our most recent visit, we saw the strawberry moon from our room. Five stars.
I worked a wedding here on 5/28 and was struck by how good the staff were. Shirley, their event coordinator, was always around and ready to help, and she was happy to accommodate. At least three servers checked on me, brought me food or a drink, and asked if I needed anything, even though I wasn’t a wedding guest. What a team. I’d gladly work here again. The rooms and accommodations were gorgeous, clean, and well serviced. The food was delicious, prepared and presented just right. The staff left the strongest impression. The pool areas were old and rough, with abrasive, sandpaper-like cement on the floors. It seemed like it could scrape a child’s face if they went underwater and rubbed against it. The slide was broken, the waterfall looked like it was falling apart, and the towels were cheap. The location was so-so. I won’t return. The room and building felt dark, dank, and dirty. The toilet was tiny, the carpet old and dirty, the comforter rough and gross, and the pillows were flat as pancakes. My sheets were good-quality cotton, but had blood on them. The TV was too small, and the remote didn’t work, though a nice guy brought me a working one. The bedside lights were out. The shower had hot water and good pressure, but the old tub and shower tile and wallpaper looked moldy. It felt like they were trying to squeeze a little more money out of the place before condemning it.
I only tried the restaurant, not the hotel or a conference. Since it’s called a conference center, I expected a nicer-looking restaurant. Instead, both dining rooms were generic table-and-chair spaces, more like a community center serving food. Nothing special about the setting. Service was incredibly slow and disorganized. The servers didn’t connect with customers, just went through the motions of bringing food, like a commissary. The food itself was good, though, and the fresh-squeezed orange juice was delicious. I hope they keep it, since it sets them apart from the other restaurants in the area.
The outdoor pool was a highlight, with three sections and a slide staffed by two lifeguards. We booked before school started in IL because the kids wanted a water park, while mom and dad didn’t want to pay for Noah’s Ark. It turned out to be a great choice, and I’d stay again. Our room was clean and felt big enough for the four of us. I was surprised that the sliding door opened onto a porch overlooking the outdoor pool. There was also a mini fridge and microwave for leftovers. After long days sightseeing, we could put on a movie and fall asleep to one of the many cable channels, including HBO. The hotel was close to restaurants and the highway. Staff were great and accommodating, and the large parking lot had enough room for trucks and trailers without blocking the entrance or exit.
