Our week-long family vacation at Butcher Rose Mansion in Butchertown, KY was deeply disappointing and at points felt unsafe. The property cost us over $5,000 for the week, but basic upkeep, cleanliness, and safety were lacking. Airbnb refunded 30% of the stay, and I reported the mold, pests, and air quality concerns to the Louisville Public Health Department. I don’t recommend renting the house in its current condition; major issues need to be addressed first. The outside area was hard to enjoy because of the overwhelming smell from a nearby pig processing facility. The surrounding area was run down, and the grounds were neglected, with leaves, branches, and debris scattered around. The house looked beautiful at first, but the basement “Bar” smelled strongly of mildew, and we found standing water and significant mold on the walls. That night, several family members heard animals in the air vents. A handyman later confirmed the animal problem and the water issues. There were serious problems in several rooms. My bathroom had no cold water and barely any hot water. Wasps came through the ceiling in my son’s room, and he had to kill them throughout the night. Several bedrooms had no usable storage, so we lived out of our luggage for the whole stay. The kitchen cabinets had expired food, spills, and grime, and other family members also found old food and poor cleaning in their rooms. We reported the problems right away, but the host and property management were slow and unhelpful, with days passing and little action. Pest control was promised more than once and never showed. The stay completely derailed our family vacation.
Check-in went well, and having enough rooms for everyone to have a private room and bathroom was helpful. The kitchen looked beautiful, though we found expired food and condiments, plus a hole in the floor. The house needs a proper cleaning and more upkeep. Doorknobs came off, the kitchen tables weren’t stable, and it needs an exterminator.
There was loads of room between the dining and sitting areas, and the outside seating could fit even more people. The kitchen was modern and roomy enough for ten guests. I liked the old-fashioned feel of the wood floors too. Nice place, though I’m still trying to find my prescription glasses.
I came to Louisville for work and added a couple of days to my trip, since the weekend before was Veterans Day weekend. The house was beautiful. There was one small logistical snag, then the rest of the trip went smoothly. It’s close to downtown and the start of the bourbon trail, and the kitchen is the best I’ve ever used. This isn’t a B&B, so there’s no staff on site or breakfast. My room felt secure even with other guests in the house, and we never crossed paths. I’d stay again, and I gave the managers a few suggestions that might make stays more comfortable. Bring your own hair dryer and iron or ironing board.
Staying at the Butcher Rose was a joy. The owners are sweet and quick to respond, and all they ask is that guests treat this stunning home with respect, which anyone should. It’s on Frankfort Ave. and within walking distance of several restaurants, cafes, and shops. There’s also a spacious lot for parking a car or truck if you want to explore the rest of the city. This might be the most gorgeous place I’ve ever stayed, a lovely secret in Louisville. I hope it gets more notice for the owners’ sake, and I’ll look it up again whenever I need a place in town.
