5th Street Inn

I liked how comfortable the room was, and the fridge was nice and cold. The Inn sits off the main road, so the only street noise we noticed was from other guests parking. There’s Mexican food right across the street, and the cute downtown area is an easy walk away. Check-in was simple, too. We did hear water sounds from a strange door behind the closet, which was more funny than bothersome, and the upstairs guests stomped around when they first arrived but quieted down. We had a really enjoyable stay and would come back.

It’s right at the start of the town’s main road, so it was easy to walk up and down and enjoy Mariposa. The staff were super friendly and eager to make sure we had what we needed. Our room was quiet and very clean. Everything about the place was amazing.

The bedding in both of our two rooms was clean, but the rooms themselves were dusty, the furniture worn, and the decor dated. The place looks charming in the photos, yet the maintenance problems make it feel like there are lawsuits waiting to happen. The exterior paint was peeling, and the railing could leave a splinter in your hand. There was overgrown brush by the porch, and the patio and its furniture were very dirty. The shuttered patio doors looked nice, but their hinges seemed close to giving out, so we were careful going onto the porch. There’s no one on site to manage the Inn or contact if something goes wrong, and there’s no ice machine. The shower only got lukewarm, with water pooling while we showered, and the bathroom sinks drained poorly. The high chairs at the tall table wobbled, and one needed a lot of attention. The sofa bed was extremely worn and needed maintenance. It was difficult to pull out and put away, though it still worked for sleeping, so we assumed it was usable. Then, a day and a half later, the owner said the room couldn’t be rented with the sofa in that condition. Why rent it to me, then? Since nobody is there to report problems to, be prepared for Randy, the owner, to contact you a whole day after checkout. He asked for money for what he called broken furniture and said he would charge my credit card. He also tried to guilt me, saying things like, “this is a small family establishment,” “this is how we keep our prices down,” “you must understand,” and “I have to charge you cause I'm a small business.” I don’t understand that. Whether it’s small or large, the place needs maintenance. It’s sad that the Inn seems to take advantage of customers with low rates and little to no upkeep. With more care put into the property, it could be a fabulous, charming little spot.

We ended up needing a room late after visiting Yosemite NP, which we hadn’t expected, so we called the 5th Street Inn. Randy was friendly and helpful on the phone and got us a reservation quickly. Check-in went smoothly. Our room was clean and had its own bathroom and balcony. It’s in a cute little town, too. My husband and I would stay again if we’re back in the area. Thank you!
