SpringHill Suites by Marriott McAllen Convention Center

We booked a room with two beds, but were given an accessible room with one bed and a couch marked by odd, smelly stains. There were ants in the bathroom, too. We hadn’t been told the hotel was being remodeled, though we’d booked a room described as new and clean. Manager Iliana Ramirez offered no solution. She sent maintenance to spray insecticide while we were still there, then told us there’d be no refund or room change, and that we could leave if we weren’t happy. We stayed on a Saturday and were told she wouldn’t be available to speak with until Monday. The facilities and service were both terrible. I don’t recommend it.

The people working there were extremely friendly and tried hard to make sure I was happy. The shuttle only runs during certain hours, but the front desk kindly paid for a taxi when I had an early flight. The room smelled, and the renovation looked careless. The mirrors, racks, and decor were bolted on crooked, the wallpaper was sloppy, and some of the tiles overlapped. The coffee maker was missing a part, so I couldn’t make coffee. A spotlight outside my window lit up the hotel. The fitness room barely met a 3 star standard: weights were missing, the elliptical didn’t work, and my keycard never opened the door, so I had to get someone from the desk every time I wanted to use it. I also saw termites crawling around. It was a disappointment, and I used to trust Marriott, but this stay has me reconsidering.

The staff were very friendly and accommodating, which helped. Still, this business trip stay at SpringHill Suites McAllen Convention Center was mediocre. The property feels dated and could use some attention and updates. It was louder than I expected on weekdays and over the weekend, making it harder to focus or relax. With some improvements to the rooms and better noise control, it could be a much better choice for business.

Housekeeping came to our door at 9, knocking and shouting “HOUSEKEEPING.” Staff should know who has checked out. When I called the front desk, the woman said they probably knocked because they were going to have a meeting. If they’re having a meeting, they should just go have it and leave the doors alone. I barely rested because of the noise anyway. The room was odd and dated, with no inside handles on the bathroom doors, pipes banging in the night, a toilet that kept running, and a TV that wasn’t lined up with the bed. This was probably my worst stay with the Marriott branch. I won’t recommend it or return.
