Homewood Suites By Hilton Memphis Poplar

This is Poplar Inn and Suites, not Homewood Suites. Roaches were everywhere: in the refrigerator, sink, dishwasher, on the floor, and crawling on the walls. We asked them to spray, but it didn't help, and they left the bottle with us. We couldn't cook or keep food around. The front desk was rude when we called several times for towels or toilet paper. We were there four days and had to request room cleaning, but even after we did, they never cleaned the suite. Construction was going on, so forget sleeping in. The location was okay, not far from the airport or downtown. Several things listed on the website weren't available, including free breakfast and a hot tub, and the pool didn't work. We asked for a refund or discount, but were told the staff couldn't authorize it. When we asked who could, she didn't know. Don't come here.

The staff were kind and helpful, which made the condition of the place feel even worse for the people who work there. Our room had stains on the walls and carpet, dim lighting with several bulbs out, and broken air conditioning. The strongest problem was the heavy marijuana smell mixed with an unknown chemical odor. It clung to our clothes and took two washes to remove. This place needs a full renovation, especially at that price. Completely unacceptable.

I’ve never had a hotel stay this bad. The grounds are old and moldy, and inside our room the carpet and furniture were stained. The outside-entry door wasn’t even closed when we arrived. We could maybe have put up with that if anything worked. The AC failed for both nights, and we kept calling for help while sweltering. Different people gave us different explanations, and maintenance spent so much time in the room that they were around for nearly half our stay. We couldn’t get clean towels all day, so we were sweaty and unable to shower. The room keys also kept failing, and we were told we’d have to wait for maintenance to return to the grounds to let us in, with no idea when that would be. I planned a vacation and felt like I’d landed in a nightmare. Now I’m broke from this stay and need another vacation to recover. There’s too much to even type.

At midnight we checked in with four exhausted kids, and I wish we’d left right then. If it had just been my husband and me, we would have. We usually stick with Hilton properties as Hilton Gold members because we know what to expect, and I can’t believe this one carries the brand or costs $250 a night. The room looked unclean, the sheets and towels were dingy, and there were dark red stains across the carpet in several places in every room. Mold covered the air vents. The tub filled up after 5-10 minutes, so I had to cut my shower short and rinse my feet in the sink. My husband decided not to shower. There were also a lot of very sketchy people who clearly seemed to live here.
