Staybridge Suites Memphis - Poplar Ave East by IHG

The front desk staff apologized and seemed concerned when I reported what I found, but the manager’s response left me frustrated. He tried to smooth things over with a superficial, dismissive manner instead of taking professional responsibility. I expect a much higher standard from IHG and staybridge, especially as someone who has stayed at many Staybridge Suites locations and usually appreciates the consistency. This was easily my least favorite stay. There was visible mold on the bathroom ceiling, and the common areas smelled strongly of dog urine as soon as I stepped off the elevator. At breakfast, I saw a cockroach crawling on the dry foods counter, which completely put me off eating there.

We stopped for one night on the way down to the Gulf, and the room was clean and fit all six of us. The staff were friendly, and breakfast had more choices than at other hotels where we’ve stayed. The carpet and furniture are worn and could use renovation. It’s not much to look at, but I was mostly there with my eyes closed anyway. I’d stay again.

We needed somewhere clean to sleep before my spouse’s surgery, and for under $120 a night, this was just right. I’m fussy about cleanliness and still Cloroxed everything, but I couldn’t find bugs, hair, smears, dust, or anything else, and the bed looked spotless, even in the mattress corners. The pillows were comfortable, the bed had a nice firmness, the shower had hot water, and there was even a bathroom vent, which you don’t often get in hotels. We didn’t use the full fridge, microwave, or stovetop, but it was nice to have them. We left early for surgery, so I can’t comment on breakfast, though there was a big buffet area and I smelled bacon when we checked out. We stay at fancy resorts and hotels around the country and Caribbean, but this was perfect for what we needed, and we’d come back. I don’t write many reviews, but other people’s comments helped me pick this hotel, so I wanted to share our experience.

Christmas was tough for me, and the hotel service gave me a safe place to step away from family drama. The kitchen and breakfast crew were wonderful, and Michael at the front desk was kind and helpful during a hard holiday. I’d recommend it.
