Super 8 Memphis/Dntn/Graceland

The staff seemed friendly, and breakfast was sufficient. Parking was easy to drive into, but getting out meant backing all the way to the street since there's only one way in and no turnaround. The place is old. My room was mostly clean, though they hadn't swept behind the bathroom door, where toilet paper and a bath soap wrapper were left. The property outside wasn't very clean either. They took my towels the first morning and never brought any back, leaving me without towels all day. The door was loose and had to be slammed to catch, with no seal, so I could feel a draft.

The room seemed clean, but brown water came out of the faucet. Ten minutes after checking in, I reported it at the desk and the man already knew there was a water service disruption that day. I checked out right away. Super 8 should have warned guests before they arrived. It was terrible customer service and a real waste of my time. I had to find another room at the last minute. Guests need clean water.

The parking was the worst part. The lot is narrow, doesn't go around the building, and ends without anywhere to turn around. I think there's only one handicapped space. Our room was dirty, but staff came right away with smiles to fix it. The remote needed batteries, and they quickly brought some, again smiling. The rooms were mediocre at best, but the whole staff was so nice, helpful, and informative that they made the stay wonderful. We left a day early, and although I thought I'd have to pay for the full reservation, they didn't charge us for that day. The staff really were the best part. Other than the parking, it was wonderful.

The family-run staff were lovely, and they even offer a very cheap shuttle to take you downtown. For customer service and the experience with them, I'd give five stars all day. The property itself is another matter. It's old and run down, and my nicely decorated room still had damage and water marks. There were cracks in the wall and at the base of the whirlpool tub, odd drip stains, and painted-over bubbles. I can see they're making upgrades when they can, but the room wasn't worth what I paid. Cleaning was sloppy too, with food bits in the microwave and a poorly cleaned fridge. It reeked of bleach, and since the windows don't open, the only way to air it out was to leave the door open. In that neighborhood, I wasn't comfortable doing that. The toilet didn't flush right. After seeing the fridge and microwave, I wiped every surface with chlorox wipes and kept wondering what else had been missed. In my opinion, the whole property should be torn down and rebuilt. It's beyond repair.
