Wingate by Wyndham Memphis East

We slept well and were safe inside, with a 24-hour security guard, but I'm canceling our booking here in two weeks and switching to a Best Western. The place is a dump, and I don't want my girls staying somewhere this low quality when I travel with family. I've slept in worse, though, and at least there were no bedbugs. It isn't the worst, but it isn't the best. The toilet seat was broken, the outlets didn't work, and the body wash was empty. Showers started cold, then turned scalding after five minutes. The pool and workout area were closed off with caution tape, and there was a homeless camp in the parking lot. The bed was like a trampoline, which was kind of funny. When I rolled over, my wife went flying.

The hotel's close to the highway, which is handy, and check-in was easy. At first the room seemed average and the first impression was okay. Then we noticed big yellow stains with clear drip marks on the walls. Without a liner on the shower curtain, the whole bathroom flooded when we showered. There were what looked like bugs, hopefully, smashed into the bathroom walls, and the sink kept dripping heavily beneath signs about saving the earth and being eco-friendly. When I called the front desk to ask if anything could be fixed, the woman told me, “it’s actually a very nice room sir”. They served pancakes instead of waffles at breakfast, which feels like a crime. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

I've stayed at around six hotels in Memphis recently, and this was easily the best experience. The front desk staff were friendly and truly kind, going well beyond good customer service. This will definitely be my go-to place on future trips.

We booked 15 rooms through group sales for our school, but the beds we were promised would be queens felt much closer to twins. With four kids assigned to each room, there was no way they'd fit. The front desk insisted those were their “queen” beds. When we checked the rooms, all the kids said they were grossed out by mold in the bathrooms and the general condition of the rooms. We arrived well after midnight, and after five hours there wasn't anything we could do. Now we're trying to figure out where to take the kids tomorrow night because we can't stay here again. Fifteen rooms is a large enough sample for me to say people should stay far away. I'm curious what the front desk will say tomorrow morning. I'd give zero stars if I could.
