The Balfour Hotel

Our stay at the Balfour Miami Beach Hotel began badly when we discovered they’d placed a $600 hold on the room without telling us. That was shocking. Most hotels hold around $100-$200 for incidentals. We couldn’t get clear answers from the staff about the charge or our stay. They seemed unprepared and unhelpful, and getting basic information was far harder than it should’ve been. For a hotel marketed as higher-end, the service fell well short of expectations. I wouldn’t recommend staying here, especially if you expect clear charges and staff who can help.

We had a fun, luxurious stay, with a superb restaurant on site and friendly staff. This boutique hotel has plenty of charm and style, from the lobby and courtyard to the terrace and room. The beds were comfortable, and there were nice extras like quality coffee in the room, welcome drinks, bikes, and beach chairs and umbrellas. It was an easy walk or bike ride to the beach and the pier, where we could see the boats. A lovely base for exploring South Beach.

It’s a small, quiet hotel in a handy spot near the beach and all the restaurants. Our room was clean and spacious, with a comfortable bed and pillows. There’s also a little fridge stocked with drinks and snacks, and the room works well for two. The window covering is the problem. There are no privacy curtains, so with the curtains closed the room is very dark, but opening them means having no privacy.

After a day, I’d noticed a few downsides to the cute hotel I’d liked at first. The garden feels secluded, and it’s close to the ocean. But the AC is loud, the bathroom is cramped, and one receptionist didn’t return my greeting when I said hi.
