The Hamilton Hoppin House is a beautiful historic place, and our spacious suite was spotless, with lovely bedding and everything we needed to rest comfortably. Each room we saw had its own character, while still feeling modern enough to be comfortable. The quiet, elegant setting made it a peaceful retreat. The building dates to 1856, when it was built as a summer home for the Hamilton family, and it’s in wonderful condition, decorated in a way that really brings out its Gilded Age history. We loved the grounds and shared spaces, too, especially as somewhere to unwind after a day out. Self check-in was easy, and the Middletown location gave us a quiet base just a short drive from downtown Newport’s attractions, shops, and restaurants. We had an incredible stay that exceeded our expectations, and can’t wait to return.

We planned a New England coastal road trip, but a Nor'easter led to the cancellation of two sailing tours, so we called off the trip. We had reservations at six hotels, and all of them except Hamilton Hoppin waived the cancellation fees. Hamilton kept our full $359 because we hadn’t cancelled seven days ahead. If I’d known seven days in advance that a Nor'easter was heading where we were going, I would have cancelled then. They were completely uncooperative. When we plan a spring trip, we obviously won’t book with them.

The neighborhood was lovely, and everything we had planned was about 10 minutes away. My husband and I spent a week here for my 30th birthday, and the Hamilton Hoppin House gave us a great taste of East Coast charm. The grounds were beautiful and well kept, parking was plentiful, and the house was decorated so nicely. We stayed in the Gardiner Room. It was roomy, with a bed that had plenty of space for both of us, two nightstands, and a dresser with lots of drawer space. The clean bathroom had plenty of shelves. The TV was a little small, but I was glad it was there, and I appreciated that it could cast from streaming apps. Check-in and checkout were both easy. I’d definitely recommend staying here.

The house is beautiful and the property is nice, so it has a lot of potential. Still, our stay felt like amateur hour, and I’d have had a hard time staying longer than one night. I’ve gone back and forth about writing this, and I don’t want to be negative. They did communicate with me by text. I hope they get things together.

We couldn’t wait to get out of there, and thankfully we’d only booked one night. The shower was subpar, and the room was cold, sitting at 62 degrees. The wall thermostat didn’t work, so we had to turn it off entirely. The TV was unusable too. There were three remotes, and none of them worked. We called for help but never heard back. The online photos showed muffins and fruit, but there was none, and no coffee either. There also weren’t any bottles of water in the room, despite what the listing suggested. It wasn’t as advertised.
