The Captain's Quarters

They kindly mailed my orthopedic pillow after I forgot it and asked them to send it. The view is unbeatable any time of year. I’ve stayed in the Condos in both summer and winter, and they’re clean and comfortable. Bring your own blanket for curling up on the couch by the fireplace while you watch the ocean.

My wife and I come for a weekend every September, and this year the outdoor bar was open for the first time. The weather was beautiful, but they’d turned off the pool heater and filled the pool with cold tap water. On a sunny weekend like that, I don’t see why the heater couldn’t be running. The smart TVs in the rooms are another odd choice, since the hotel gives you no way to stream anything. The restaurant is beautiful, and I remember coming here as a kid for good food and great times, but now it isn’t open for lunch, dinner, or evening drinks. They’ve missed the mark on a few things. I hope they read this and consider making changes.

We visited for a long weekend from Sunday to Tuesday at the end of September and got a great rate. The staff were pleasant throughout and gave us excellent service each day. The hotel is right on the beach and within walking distance of lots of shops and restaurants in town. Our updated room felt clean and fairly modern, with a small cooktop, mini fridge, and sink if you want to prepare anything. Breakfast is included. It’s not something to write home about, but it beats a typical continental buffet. Try the Belgian waffle. We were on the second floor, and a few boards in the balcony walkways felt a little loose under the carpet. It wasn’t easy to spot, and replacing a few boards and adding screws would help. There’s also just one ice machine, at the far end of the hotel. We had a nice stay and would happily return to Montauk.

The location is outstanding, and the atmosphere was nice. The complimentary breakfast is really good. One morning, we got it to go and ate on the beach. The heated pool was also lovely. The hotel provided a crib, which helped since we had our one-year-old and there’s no elevator. If you’re on the top floor, you have to carry your luggage up two flights of stairs. At the beach on our first day, a field mouse ran around on everyone’s things. I’d never seen that on a beach before. I thought I heard mice scratching in the walls in our room, but I’m not sure. The check-in girl was very rude. The rooms could have been larger for what we paid, and the bathrooms were tiny, with small, outdated showers. The walls are paper-thin, so you can hear everything. There was screaming, yelling, and rowdiness outside around midnight, and the AC was loud enough that we had to leave it on to drown it out. This wasn’t 9 p.m., and we had a one-year-old baby with us. Royal Atlantic had its ups and downs, but we’d give it another chance if they made some small improvements.
