Cambria Hotel Mount Pleasant – Charleston

I’d planned to skip writing a review because the clerk who checked me in was so nice, but the stay ended up being stressful. I extended by a day because my company had scheduled an 11 a.m. Zoom meeting with my boss and clients. During the meeting, the hotel phone rang, stopped, then rang again. I apologized to everyone and asked them to ignore it. Then my cell rang, followed by another call and a text. After the meeting, I called back and was told they’d found my reservation and just wanted to ask if I wanted to stay in the same room. Really? At checkout the next morning, the phone rang again right at 11 while I was gathering my things, and I rushed out. More than 20 miles away, I realized I’d left my medicine in the fridge, so I drove all the way back. That night at home, I noticed I’d also left my Invisalign retainers in the bathroom. Replacing them and getting them sent before my teeth shift is going to cost a fortune. This didn’t feel like a place where you can relax. It felt like they just wanted me in and out.

The room itself was nicely laid out, with comfortable beds and pillows, and the customer service was very good. The location was convenient too. But I picked this hotel after reading all the “quiet” reviews, hoping for a peaceful stay, and it was noisy for all three nights. The windows seemed soundproof, but the floors carried every stomp and bang from the guests above us, and doors slammed often. With an adjoining room, it felt like the people next door were in the same room. If quiet is what you’re after, I’d look elsewhere.

My room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The staff I dealt with were also very nice and accommodating. The window, though, faced the back lot of the garage next door. It looked more like a junkyard, so I kept the window shut all week. There’s a morning coffee bar, but honestly I preferred the free K-Cup coffee in the room. Laundry costs $2 per wash or dry, and the front desk will give you soap and dryer sheets if you ask. The gym and pool looked nice, though I didn’t try them.

I’ve spent more than half the nights in a year on the road for work and stayed in hundreds of hotels across the country. This was easily one of the worst. The rooms were loud, there was no breakfast, and the staff weren’t helpful. The shower floor was extremely slippery, with no grip pads available. The restaurant and bar area sat unstaffed all night, and for $250 a night they didn’t even give me a bottle of water at check-in. I had a nosebleed during the night and got two tiny drops of blood on the corner of the sheet. They charged me $30 for it, which is way outside what I’ve encountered at other hotels. Terrible experience, and not worth even a quarter of what I paid.
