There was a time when Abineau Lodge must have been a lovely place, with wonderful staff. But as we were leaving, the previous owner appeared and seemed completely indifferent to the problems we raised. I’d check with the owners before booking. I hope the new owners take customer service more seriously. We didn’t know we were the last guests under the current ownership. It was no longer operating as a Bed and Breakfast, and nobody was there to welcome us or let us in. Our room needed more cleaning: there were spots on the duvet, and I had to look through the storage closets for mirror cleaner. We couldn’t find instructions for making ice or turning on the air conditioner. When we came back, all the lights were off, which made the place very dark and distressing.

The forest views and peaceful, secluded setting made for a really relaxing stay. It’s just outside the city, and Melita, the manager, gave us a warm welcome when we arrived. Breakfast was great too. I’d stay here again and recommend it to anyone.

There was a nice selection of juices and a good variety of food, but much of it was running low or gone, and restocking took a long time. The coffee was awful, honestly undrinkable. Juices and coffee are included in the price, while espresso and alcoholic drinks cost extra. I was disappointed with Sunday brunch today. It felt overpriced, and the service was slow. A large plate is $14.95 and a small one is $10.95. You get one trip through the food line, unless you pay another $4 to go back to the buffet.

The homemade pastries were tasty, and the hot chocolate was high quality. We took breakfast out to the patio deck, with snow and trees all around. It was a serve-yourself spread upstairs, with cereal, oatmeal, pastries, coffee, and hot chocolate. We’d brought some food of our own, and the hosts let us keep it in their mini fridge, so that worked out fine. The BnB feels like a beautiful, proper winter cabin, and the two hosts welcomed us kindly and showed us to our room. Our queen bedroom was clean and cozy, with a heated fireplace, a very comfortable bed, and a lovely forest view. We also played chess in the upstairs game room/breakfast room. We’d stay again and recommend it to others.

The room was clean and the service was great. My wife and I spent a week at Abineau Lodge for our anniversary, and really enjoyed the quiet, remote setting. It’s also a convenient central spot for day trips in different directions.
