Murphys Suites

The location is just off the highway, about two minutes from Murphys main street. The motel is basic but clean, and the staff were friendly and professional. Our room was a simple rectangle with toiletries, a TV, an in-room phone, and decent-speed Wi-Fi. We didn’t use the pool or spa. The dining room was closed, so they brought a bag of donuts for each guest staying the night. The lobby coffee was freshly brewed with locally roasted beans.

The service was exceptional, and it was a lovely surprise to have donuts delivered to our door in the morning. We had everything we needed and the rooms were very clean. I’d gladly stay at the same hotel next time I’m in the area. Just keep in mind that this is a really old hotel, and the rooms look quite dated. It’s not the place for fancy, luxury accommodations. The Wi-Fi also ran a little slowly at times.

Ms. Shari at the front desk was exceptionally pleasant and helpful, but this was my least favorite place among the accommodations I tried during my visit to Murphy, California. The rooms were clean, though unremarkable and quite dated, with a rustic look. It was one of the most expensive options we considered, at more than $299.00 per night for our suite, reportedly the last room available, so we expected more. Our requests for early check-in or late check-out were firmly refused, with the explanation, “We can't ask people to leave.” That was disappointing given the price. I’d return to Murphy, California, but would probably choose somewhere else next time.

The Wi-Fi and TV issues led us to move rooms. In our first suite, near the pool end, Wi-Fi reception was very poor, the TVs had a static bar moving down the screen, and there was a loud sound of running water on the other side of the wall in the morning. The front desk staff helped move us closer to the motel’s center. Wi-Fi was a little better there, and the static bar was less noticeable but still present. I kept losing the internet connection on both my phone and laptop. They offer Comcast channels, but apparently no streaming on demand. There was no channel guide in the room, though the front desk gave us one when we asked. We had a two-room suite, with a bedroom containing two beds and a sitting room with a refrigerator, coffee pot, and other items. The facilities looked generally clean. I saw workers sweeping carpets and dusting ceiling edges and walls several times. But after my shower, I put a somewhat damp towel on the couch and sat on it while I dried off more. When I stood up, the towel had a huge brown stain from something on the couch. I couldn’t see a stain on the couch either before or after, but it felt strange and made me question how clean the furniture was. The front desk staff said they shampoo the furniture regularly. The advertised “Continental Breakfast” was either a thawed, previously frozen “El Monterey” breakfast burrito to heat in the room microwave, or six small donuts. We also got small cartons of orange juice. I found the breakfast claim laughable, though it was convenient and would be fine if you weren’t expecting much. There isn’t a lot of lodging in Murphys, so I might stay there again. One address tip: their website lists 134 CA-4 in Murphys, which sent our car’s GPS a few blocks east. The correct address includes the “W”: Murphys Suites, 134 W CA-4, Murphys, CA 95247.
